Short Cleaning Intervals Okay ?

This is a continuation of other posts that I've made on a used vehicle that I recently purchased. With 55,000 miles on it the valvecover was quite dirty when I opened it up and the operation of the pcv valve was questionable so I changed it with new oil (Castrol Syntec 10w30, filter, and new plugs.

I can't buy auto-rx locally and I didn't want to buy it online just yet, so I used about 4/10ths of a quart of Riselone with new Castrol Syntec 10w30 on a 5 quart sump qty.

After 500 miles I decided to dump the oil and it is quite black for such a short interval. I guess that is a good sign that some decent cleaning is occurring. I've just put in High Mileage Mobil 10w30 with another 4/10ths quart of Riselone. I think I want to run a couple of really short intervals to make sure the engine is a clean as possible before switching to Amsoil 10w30 and putting it away for winter. I don't want to run Riselone for long intervals, just at partial dilution and short runs should like a maintenance dose. I don't care about the cost of dumping this oil out early to get the dirt out, I thought I would dump the oil out in short intervals until it starts looking reasonably clean and then I can switch to Amsoil without additives. Full blown winter will likely be here within 3-4 weeks so I don't have much time to put on many miles on a summer/hobby car, so I thought short intervals would be helpful. Does anyone think this is a decent approach ?. Is dirty oil on a short interval a good sign that some decent cleaning is occurring. I'd appreciate any opinions.

Give MMO a try, it is cheap and easy to buy in the US. Not sure about CA perhaps you can cross the border and get some if needed. Run a full qt for an entire OCI, use it with any oil you like, the results are impressive! You can add a pint of it to the Amsoil for the last 1000 miles of the OCI as well. Any way you slice it it works!

I would continue with the short intervals, but I would sub in MMO rather than Rislone (assuming it's just the solvent flush one). It does sound like some cleaning is going on, similar to the treatment that I'm doing to my daughter's Accord.

55K only? Must have been abused.

Why not continue what you are doing, but maybe increase the dosage to a full quart, for a 1000 mile interval. I think Rislone is even better than MMO.

Here is what their productdescription of Rislone Engine treatment says:
"Rislone Engine Treatment is a high quality penetrating lubrication oil, combined with protective engine additives and unique cleaning additives. Its multi-grade formula allows the oil to flow freely and provides protection over a broader temperature range. Can you wait until next year to start the Amsoil and regular intervals? That way you can do short cleaning intervals(Mobil 1 good choice) for a total of 6 months.

I would say 1 quart in cooler temps would be fine. Works great in the Accord.

We can't get MMO up here in Ontario easily... He would have to go to the U.S. like I do for MMO.

To the O.P. I have MMO & ARX full unopened bottles of the stuff. If you want to purchase a bottle of each or of one/other PM me and I will send one to you or depending on where you are we can meet up.

I agree with the others, I would use a whole pint of MMO in the oil and good filter and drive it like that for a few short intervals.

wow,thanks for all of the quick replies on this. I personally like Riselone for what it is. It is a relatively decent viscosity, at least a 10w30 visc, so I don't worry about it thinning things out like other solvent type products as this is a high revving (9k rpm) Honda motor. The Riselone isn't a flush product but seems to offer more of a gentler cleaning effect.

I used to see MMO here in our auto parts store in year's past, but I haven't seen it recently, so I chose Riselone.

I can certainly keep these short interval cleanings going for a few more months, if it is beneficial, and then put in the Amsoil in spring when it gets back on the road. I already bought a case of Amsoil but waiting to use it when appropriate.

The car is in mint condition and the engine practically runs like new. Though it seems to run even better now that it has some new parts and cleaner fluid. The previoius owner did 4,000 kms (very short) oil changes on Castrol Syntec 10w30. I think a partially plugged pcv valve may have caused issues. I put in a new pcv valve as soon as I got the car and repaird a valvecover leak (perhaps a symptom of a bad pcv). I don't know if the Syntec was causing issues on it's own, the previous owner swore by it.

Thin viscosity of a flushing oil like MMO is good because it will get into the rings alot easier and help flush out any gunk sitting in there. A 30wt flush product like Risoline will to but it takes a lot longer.

1 qt is the suggested dose. My dad has been doing it for 35 years give or take, it won't harm a thing. In the winter there is the perk of better cold starts too.

well it is a real pain in the arse to take off the valvecover, and I don't want to re-use the valvecover gasket and sparkplug gaskets after the cover is removed. I just installed new gaskets to repair a leak situation and I'd rather not touch them again for a while. Maybe I can get one of those dental mirror type devices into the oil fill hole and look around that way. The valvecover was spotless wehn I reinstalled it, I scrubbed it down real well with carb cleaner, spray nine and soapy water. All of the staining came off with a good scrub, so it went back on in like new condition. I hope it stays that way for a while.

Today i just changed the oil in the Jetta with GTX HM 10W40 with a half of a qrt of MMO. Im courious to see if anything happens.

well it should have some good cleaning potential. You'll be able to see how well it cleans once you dump the fluid and see how dark it is compared to regular changes. Keep us posted.
