In my neck of the desert (where it's 61°F today) ARCO Regular vs Shell Premium w/ V-Power can differ by 56¢/gallon (phoenixgasprices.com). That's $11.20 for a 20-gallon tank and the same price for a bottle of Techron at Checker/O'Reilly's.

Not to criticize, but why not buy a tank of Shell or Chevron Premium every recommended 3,000 miles vs. messing with buying a bottle?

Or am I missing something?

I have seen Shell V-power selling for 50 cents more per gallon than Shell regular unleaded. A few miles down the road is another Shell station where V-power is 30 cents more than regular. That makes me think some Shell stations are simply gouging the chumps.
 
I've tried Shell gasolines before and never noticed anything good nor bad about this fuel. The only snip I have about it is that in my neighborhood is the high price!!!!! As long as the price is high then you'll never see me use it despite it's claim to be a fuel cleaner.

Currently I'd rather use Arco and pay out of my own pocket. It's been touted to be ultra cheap gas BUT I admit I have no issues using this gas. All I dois add a big bottle of Techron every 3K and move on.

That's all it is, is primarily marketing to dumb things down to saying, the additives have been altered.

Shell does use PEA in their additive package, like Chevron & Texaco, AFAIK.

People here are anal enough to use certain fuel additives that contain PEA, but many of them turn a blind eye to the actual gas they are putting in, saying it's all the same.

We know the cheaper alternative is PBA. We all know that PBA does clean, but leaves its own residue. So...what's the point of putting gas with PBA then clean up its own mess with PEA? Might as well start with gas that has PEA, and throw in a bottle of Techron, SI-1, Regane etc every now and then (and/or continuous maintenance doses)

I got as much out of the article as I got from Shell's product information. It talks about all the wonderful things the gasoline does, but says little about the mechanism or technical aspects of HOW it achieves deposit control. I'm not saying this product is snake oil. The article does not satisfy my technical curiosity. Maybe Lubes'N'Greases will go in depth on this.

Well, you purchase the rights to the "mechanism or technical aspects" from SOPUS, then post it on BITOG for the world to see and the other fuel refiners to immediately copy.

Count on the Chinese to be first in line for the "R&D work," i.e., "Rip-off and Duplicate."

Then we will all have our technical curiosity satisfied.

One doesn't need to "purchase the rights" to learn how something works. If it's patented, the explanation should be in the patent, and the patent prevents "other fuel refiners from immediately copying". If it's not patented, then SOPUS is irresponsibly taking a chance on losing their edge to the competition.

What I meant was I'd rather buy a cheaper peice gas and then add a bottle of Techron every 3K. My feeling is that the bottle is more concentrated for that particular volume of gas. Just buying a tank of Chevron or Shell with there additive might NOT be as concentrated as adding a bottle.

Nitrogen in the additive package is part of Shell’s blend. The nitrogen is added at the molecular level to increase the solubility and stability of the other additives so they remain active during the combustion cycle. Most additives collapse under high heat and pressure, but the nitrogen creates a polar molecule (a molecule in which there is some separation of charge in the chemical bonds) that adheres to metal surfaces to prevent deposits forming and cleans existing deposits.

Chemical engineers might laugh at my description, but in simple terms, the nitrogen helps the other additives work.


My Tribologist recommended Shell V-Power. My used oil analysis show very good clean combustion effiency. V-Power is all I use. Same $$ as Chevron, 76, Valero in my gas war $$ cluster of stations. Plus the 5 cent off/gallon when I use my Shell Card works for me. My engine requires premium only...
