Hi guys, (and ladies),

What oil would you choose for an 4-cyl, turbo gasoline engine? I found and 've read many good things about this two oils:

- Shell Ultra 5W40
- Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40

The Liqui have an HSTS of 3.5> but I can't seem to find what the Shell does, what oil is here the 'better' one? Thank you guys.

Those are functionally equivalent with similar approvals and licenses.

If someone tells you there is a significant difference they are making it up.

HTHS of Shell Helix will be over 3.5 by virtue of the approvals and that it's a 40 grade.. Euro oils in 40 grade typically have an HTHS of around 3.7-4.0cP.

Personally I like Shell because they use GTL in this product. That's not to say that LM does not, but they don't advertise as such.

Could you be more specific about this four cylinder turbo engine?

Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 will also have GTL base stock, whereas the Liqui Moly is going to be Group III unless you go with Synthoil which is POA based.

GTL lubricating oils are hydrocracked too.

Another thing is that at one time someone here posted some of the different products of the Qatar Pearl plant, it showed that Group II base stocks were also being produced since the only difference between those and a Group III is the viscosity index. They also noted that lubricating oils were a more minor part of the overall production.

same viscosity for both of them ,LM has lower pour point..we dont know hths for LM .i think shell is 3.7,i remember i read it somewhere in an oil club. but since my friend BMWturboDzi says 40 euro oils begin from 3.7 then i guess they have the same.
pesonally i would try LM first. for a couple of OCI if cheaper .

It doesn't, both are -45c.

Technically yes but not less than 3.5

"SAE 40 has two different HTHS limits. For SAE 0W-40, 5W-40 and 10W-40, the HTHS limit is 3.5, whereas the limit is 3.7 for SAE 40, 15W-40, 20W-40 and 25W-40"

https://www.stle.org/files/TLTArchi...SAE 40 has two, compatible with low HTHS oils.

Yes.
Mobil1 0W40=3.6
Castrol 0W40: 3.64
Motul 0W40= 3.6
Castrol 5W40= 3.6

Shell Ultra will be around 3.8.
from what i assume although the limit is 3.5 , according to your examples ,its usually no less than 3.6.
