Shell is going to MasterCard. Our present Shell Card will be unusable after May 17. The Shell MasterCard can be used anywhere for anything. What happens if the MasterCard gets skimmed at their pump? In the past they would not charge you for skimmed charges. I never use a credit card at the pump.

I'm not happy about the switch. I liked having just a Shell card so I can keep track of how much I have spent on gas easily. Plus I had 2 carbs, one in my mom's name and I just pay for her 2 fill-ups a month in her Fusion, they only sent me one.

Skimmed charges will still ultimately not be charged to you. I suspect the complaint process will be the same. You will be dealing primarily with Mastercard International in these cases now. Standard credit card protections apply to this card also. Fraud is still fraud.

You're protected regardless. It's a regulator thing..

Citibank handled the Shell card. It is now being handled by Imprint.

I think the problem is that the old Shell card could only be used at the Shell pump and maybe for stuff in their store but noe somebody can skim your Shell MaterCard and run up a huge bill anywhere. I suspect MC will drag their heels over thousands.

Maybe I should tell them to put a low limit on it.

Are you guys getting skimmed that often?

What rebate / discount is the new card offering?

Just get a card with the best deal. Lots of cards offer 3% back on a single category. Make gasoline your 3% category.
I am not getting skimmed at the pump because I only used Shells "store" card at the pump. I really do not want to use a "credit" card at the pump no matter how good the deal is. I do not want to have to deal with a card company arguing that I did not make those charges ... Life is short. keep it simple.

I bet there will be a huge uptick in skimming now.

Use a credit card anyplace you want, it doesn't matter to you if it gets skimmed, stolen or hacked. You are not responsible for charges you do not make. Lets them run up the bill all they want.
You do not have to prove you did not make the charges either. When you use a charge card, if there is disputed charges, the charge card company has to prove it was you not the other way around.
Easy stuff, leave your cash at home and use charge cards. :)

I haven't used anything OTHER than a credit card for gas (pay at the pump) in at least 15 years. I've got half a dozen I use.

I've been skimmed exactly zero times.

You are very lucky. It happens a lot.
I only usec cards at the pump for longer than that and have not either. Last time I was skimmed was 20 years ago in LA.

All the modern pumps use chip. Not impossible but much harder to skim a chip card. If the chip reader doesn't work I drive on. I won't swipe a card anymore. All the newer pumps have it. Even the dumpy BP up the road has chip reader now - no inserting.

I think if I was that worried I would just buy a bunch of pre-paid gas cards and use those?

If not buying gas at the local stations around my house, I always use my cc for gas stations outside of my area. I do not want swiping my debit card while traveling. I dont care if they get my CCs as it would be easier than dealing w my local bank account.

  • Chip cards are less vulnerable to skimming than magnetic stripe cards, but they aren’t completely safe.
  • Crooks can still capture your card information from a chip card using a technique called shimming.
  • Shimming allows criminals to create fake credit cards with your card information.

Like I said, it could be hacked, but much harder.

Shimming only works with an insert machine. If its tap you can't shim either - as best I understand. Like I said, more and more stations are going to tap.

I never have had enough loyalty to a single station to consider an oil-major branded card (plus, we are mostly Casey's/HyVee/QT/Kwik Shop/Maverik (former Kum and Go)) in this part of the world, minus the occasional BP/Amoco or Phillips 66. Fuel-ups on road trips are whatever I find convenient, but those are likely regional chains or Loves/Pilot etc. Oil-major branded stations aren't nearly as common here as other parts of the country.
So I just use my regular USBank Visa at the pump, and don't worry about skimming (it's not happened to me in the 11 years I've been pumping gas, 300k plus miles worth, and I trust them to sort it out if need be given it's "their money"). That said, I do use tap-to-pay when available. My debit card stays locked and is unlocked via the app just for a fee-free ATM once a quarter or so.

I don’t think that’s the case. It’s supposed to be one-time tokens that are exchanged and the transaction is matched to the account at the credit card processor. Intercepting the communication is useless because the same token will never be used again.

I don’t like using the smart card (chip) feature when it goes into a mechanism that also has a magnetic reader if there’s a skimmer. I suppose I might want to just put a magnet to it and insist on using chip/contactless transactions.

Chip cards cannot be simply copied. The chip holds cryptographic secrets that it will never reveal on the external interface to a reader or skimmer. Without those secrets you can't make a working copy of the chip.

My coworker just got her card skimmed at some gas station locally. She was upset because they took all her money out so she couldn't afford food. She used her debit card. I tried to explain she should not be using her debit card anywhere and she should be using a credit card when buying gas (or anything else) so the fraud liability is with the credit card company, not her fighting to get her own money back.

She started arguing with me about how there is no difference and started blaming a certain politician for ruining the world. At which point I told her I'm sorry she's going through that and moved on because some people just don't listen and somehow think that the president has something to do with people skimming debit cards?

Personally I've bought gas maybe three times in the last three years. Last time I went I went to the Costco. There was an employee checking the readers for skimmers while I was right there getting gas. I feel pretty safe. I used my Best Buy credit card which gives 5% back on gas right now.

My point is, using the CREDIT card of your choice, and move on with life. If you get skimmed go in the app and dispute it in all of five seconds and you'll be fine.

PS: All sorts of crazy stuff out there. Tap to pay isn't perfect and even Apple pay isn't perfect:but it's really not an issue - your credit card company will help you if there is an issue.
