That explains a great deal. I'm used to seeing 30,000-50,000 miles from a belt that is exposed to road salt.

I dont think road salt is common South (do I capitalize N, S, W, E?) of Interstate 40. We really have problems when the temp hovers around freezing and allows ice to form on bridges and the like.

Many people take a road trip to Florida, and need a car repair while they are here. That is why I sometimes see cars exposed to road salt.

Florida never needs road salt.

Belts almost never fail unless there is a problem with the idler or other pulleys.

Folks worry about the ribs looking bad. Its not a problem. Dealers and others scare folks in replacing them. I never had one fail yet.

Likewise here. We routinely run our service vans at least 150-200k miles between changes, and we have never broken one since they came out...
