On a non-interference motor, sure, run it until it strands you on the side of the road. No big deal.
On an interference motor like a VW, I'd replace around 7. IIRC seven years is sometimes mentioned for time intervals, would have to read up more on the exact model. Given what it will cost when it fails I'd play it conservative.
