Seeing dead stock high mileage cars...

I like the fact that you can open up a shop manual and follow all the specifications needed to repair a stock car.

Again it all depends on the market and the car.

Looks at my WS6 for instance. The specs for a mechanical repair have not changed. The OBD II codes have not changed.

It does have a tune, but it is easy reproduced.

I would imagine the guys who don't like modified cars would not be looking for an 11 sec WS6, but the parts in my car are from reputable companies such as Comp Cams, Patriot and Mcleod. They do tons of R&D. Modifications can be done right and will last just as long as a stock car. I proved that with my last 4 F-bodies and two modified supercharged 3800's. The whole F-body, Y-Body, W-body aftermarket has proved that on those cars.

Most of the time the folks that designed the car know far better about the balance between durability, performance, and longevity then some fly by night custom shop, or the vehicle owner.

I always prefer bone stock.

I don't know, it is just not the case in the 3800 or LS world. Lots of testing and lots of high mileage modified examples of the those. I am only speaking to mechanical mods. "Visual" mods are in the eye of the beholder and totally different.

As far as my GM stuff, they come real mild from the factory and they know it.

He has said a bunch of times at seminars and talks. There are plenty of aftermarket parts for the F-body that are just as good as stock. Just look at the GM performance catalog. Cams, headers, exhaust, heads, intakes and complete long blocks. All engineered by GM. The stuff works. I know.

^^^I spoke to him in person once at an SLP Customer Appreciation Day at Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., back in the good old days when they still offered those.

Yes I did every bit of the conversion myself, built adapter harness' to interface the 5.0 engine to the unique Turbo Coupe body harness, also retained the unique to '87-'88 Turbo Coupe ABS and ride control systems... Had several people say they'd been told such a swap wasn't possible, told them I'd never talked to those know it alls, didn't know it couldn't be done...

And completely agreed on specific platforms. Some had weak spots only addressed by the aftermarket.

But absolutely no one tests durability and longevity like the OEM does. They simply do not have the money, time, or equipment to do so. Computers allow them to extrapolate some data, but they are no substitute for the real world proving grounds BEATINGS that the OEM's do to every model...
