Hey all,

I was debating what oil filter to run this winter and I was leaning towards my Napa Gold 1334 I've had for a few years. I accidentally scratched the oil filter (about a 1cm long scratch) when I was testing my oil filter wrench to see if it would fit around it. I was wondering if it would be safe to run with a scratch. I was worried that running it during the winter with the road salt that it would corrode the scratch and cause it to rust. If that's the case, what kind of paint should I use to touch it up? I'd assume that I should use a high-temp paint if I do need to? Thanks.

What is the problem with a little surface rust on the OUTSIDE of an oil filter that's probably only going to be on your vehicle for 3-6 months anyway?

Just curious.

I wasn't sure if the rust would spread to the inside of the filter. I'll put some grease on the scratch, thanks.

lol

this is a bit much... something tells me that even if rust forms, it will not sacrifice the integrity of the can over the course of a winter...

Over the winter? Probably not even over a decade. I suspect you could submerge an oil filter in sea water and it would still take a couple of years to perforate the metal.

But yeah, bring it to your local body shop and see if they can't protect it with a few coats of imron. LOL

I tend to get enough oil on the outside of my filter when installing it that a scratch would not matter. Maybe you need to get polymer filter made like the doors on my Saturn. No rust or dents.

There ya go. The real solution presents itself...injection molded PLASTIC filter cans. :)

I understand ThirdeYe's concern. He's got gremlins in his car, and gremlins will turn a scratch into a canyon in no time!

I love this thread. Added it to my favorites. Thank you, ThirdeYe

With all the paranoid worrying that goes on here at BITOG I've never heard this one before! Even putting grease on it might be considered overkill, a scratch is not a problem unless you plan to run the filter multiple years.

ThirdeYe is not paranoid. He would make an excellent Quality Control Manager. Somebody send him over to Fram pronto. Fram doesn't have enough ThirdeYe's over there. What they need is ThirdeYe's, FourthEye's, and FifthEye's.

You didn't see my "unfiltered brake booster air" thread in Mechanical.

I dont see what the problem of running the can with the scratch would do. If you have any other unscratched filters lying around in the garage, use that one and save the scratched can for next summer.

Wow, surprised I got so many replies! I'm paranoid about rust, as I've experienced a lot of problems with my quarter panels on my Integra so I know how fast rust can form in the winter... I wasn't sure how fast it would spread if at all, and if it would go into the inside of the filter thus causing some problems. I'll be daring and run it all winter anyhow.

on alot of our equipment i take a scratch awl and mark the engine hours at time of change on the side of the filter, stuff that runs down the road in salt , no worrys

The most you will get is a little surface rust. Keep in mind that the oil filter is hot whenever the engine is running so it cannot condense any moisture. Pitting corrosion can't take place without some moisture and a little salt and/or some type of crevice condition.
