Scrap value of this catalytic converter

I'm parting out a 2000 Ford ZX2 and listed it on Craigslist. A scrapper offered $200 for the cat. Its got the code XS41 stamped on it. How can I find out what it's really worth? I sent pictures to this company, https://www.catalyticconverterrecycling.com/ and they said $673 but they are half way around the world. I imaging shipping it to them to be expensive and collecting a gamble.

$200 cash in hand. Have a hard time anyone would pay more then $673 for a junk pile ZX2 that was running let alone a part without markup. If it smells funny it is funny.

$200 is high, never heard of a single cat going for that much for recycle purposes.

Local place pays around $25-60 each depending on size and if its damaged.

If a scrapper offers you $200.. it must be worth close to double that.

Question is... where does the scrapper cash it in at?


I have been seeing facebook posts in my groups recently people buying catalytic converters... there must be a big demand.

That is insane, I can't imagine people actually buy them for that kind of money.

My understanding is that Cat Conv's have Platinum in them. IDK how much Plat or what it goe$ for but, the precious metal can be reclaimed

I bought a 2008 Elantra parts car to put my daughters crashed one back on the road last summer. When I had taken what I needed I listed it on CL for the remaining parts and was offered $225 for both cats. When I went to check what a used cat was worth I discovered that it's illegal to sell one except for scrap...this made me think twice about selling it. I guess they dismantle them for the 'precious metal' inside.

Worthless here. They can't be scrapped. It was the only way to stop cat theft.

It also has palladium and rhodium. Both of those are worth more than platinum.

Yes, they have a variety of platinum group metals that have some value.

And it isn't illegal to sell a used one, but it is required that you have the means and ability to test the converter for structural integrity and performance prior to sale. Very few scrap yards have this ability so the practical conclusion is that no one is selling them.

Did all of those eBay auctions actually complete or were some terminated early?

That thing is in amazing shape for 20yrs old. Intact heat shields, etc.

I got $200 from a recycler a few years back for a cat about twice the size pictured, off an '88 GM full sized sedan. It was obviously only for the rare metal value, with the pipe on it completely disintegrated from rust and the rest of the body in sad shape too. Salted winter roads will do that.

Topic converter looks a lot bigger than the factory original cat that came off of my 92 Toyota pickup. I sold it a couple years ago to a local scrapyard for $60. Could have driven a little bit further to another scrapyard and got $80.

I had an aftermarket cat installed at a muffler shop. Mechanic asked what I was going to do with old cat, and said he would give me $30 for it, so that tipped me off that I could get a lot more for it.

I've seen a few homeless in Oakland take cats to the few remaining recyclers. A buddy of mine who has his company box truck parked in a industrial park almost had theirs stolen - but no scrap dealer within 5-10 miles.

Apparently rhodium & palladium have skyrocketed, to thousands of dollars an ounce, more than gold-that's why scrap values are up & thefts are on the rise (again)...
