Scotty Doesn't Know

Sure they do, but in general, the transmissions in the video, 6L 8L and 10L transmissions from GM are quite good. Not ZF good but certainly good enough. Being sold in nearly 1 million units a year you do hear some issues. Scotty also spreads incorrect information about how the trucks downgraded because 10 speeds had problems. Totally false. You can order a Sierra with a 6 speed, 8 speed or 10 speed based on trim and options. A decision most likely made based on supply chain constraints. I imagine GM simply cannot make enough 10 speeds to equip every tahoe, suburban, pickup, van, camaro, ect that uses those transmissions.

Another note, When/If you need a new transmission for your truck/suv or whatever, the GM trans will cost significantly less and be much more available than a ZF, Aisin, ect.

The 6L & 8L units have torque converter issues, Most all 6L transmissions I rebuild had a catastrophic converter failure. People like to get stuck on the cracking drums on the early run of these units.....Hasn't been an issue in 10 years, Sure.....Every once in awhile you'll get a low mileage '07-'09 with a cracked drum.

The good thing....As you pointed out, They are one of if not THE cheapest 6 speeds to rebuild.
If contamination is real bad & ruined a lot of hard parts......Even the latest 6L transmissions are backward compatible by using the original TEHCM or clone one with HPtuners or GM-SPS.

These higher gear count transmissions sort of scare me. All those gears crammed in these sometimes tiny boxes, particularly with FWD vehicles. Maybe there's no science behind my concern. ?

I find Kilmer entertaining, though the constant shilling for Toyota gets old and the video titles are just out there in the weeds. I did buy one thing on his recommendation, a little FM transmitter gadget that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I figured for $20 it wasn't much of a risk. Turns out it works great, plays MP3s and has bluetooth. On the other hand I drive a car with an eeeevil turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (which has lasted 24 years and over 350,000 miles) and it's not even a Toyota or Honda. :)
