Anyone had the chance to drive one? Anyone own one? I've been on the market to replace my aging Focus, and I've driven all sorts of vehicles. I had settled on a used 2011 Mustang GT or 2010 Comaro SS, but by chance I got the opportunity to take a drive in a Scion FR-S.

Turned out to be a rather fun test drive, so fun in fact I took the car home.

For anyone not familiar, the car is the result of a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru. Boxer engine, low weight, rear wheel drive....its a blast to drive. 2700lbs and 200hp; its not a rocket ship, but it has enough power to be fun. This car gets sideways with the greatest of ease...partially due to the Prius tires they put on it from the factory...I'm not kidding.

My only regret is that its black. Its great looking in black, but my God, the paint shows every little imperfection.
The aftermarket is already ablaze because of all the crazy drifting fans overseas.

For the price, its a great fun car with a very traditional sports car approach.

Get another set of wheels/tires, and take to some autocross events! Thats where the car really shines. Hope you got the 6-speed MT!

I'm a big Subaru fanboi, but don't know that I'd be willing to pay the premium for the BRZ, necessarily, since I don't really care about things like HID lights. I like the looks of the FR-S better, anyway!

Very cool car! Congrats!

Add me to the list.

I've been looking at them, its sooo tempting to trade my saturn in to get one. Id get one in the metallic grey.

Are those fog lights or turn signals below the headlights?

Congrats on the new ride! I took the money I squirreled away for a BRZ and ended up buying a Transit Connect with a big chunk of it. Ouch... Needless to say I'm jealous looking at your car, and I'm pretty sure it's a lot more fun to drive than the TC.

Good luck on the black. My last 2 cars were black, and I don't think I'll go down that road again.

One of the extremely few small imports I would even consider.

Great dynamics, I can't wait to get some seat time in one.

(pssst! Turbo in development!)

Maybe in a few years...

A 250ish HP/250 ft/lb (available at some not insanely high RPM, please!) turbo engine would go nicely. IIRC by shucking the OEM tires a car mag picked up 2 seconds on a road course. Shows how the OEM tires are not meant for that car.

really reminds me of the original miata. it's a driver's car, and it doesn't apologize for it... but has much more muscle and snarl than mazda's 1.6...

I suspect this one will absolutely have a cult following over the years. small, front engine, rear drive, lots of power, doesn't compromise to meet everyone's needs... i just hope that so many of them don't end up wrapped around trees. It will make a screamer auto-x machine.

congrats on the purchase!

It's on the list of cars to replace the Mazda when that day comes.

Not too sure about the Geo Storm sized back seat though. My 8 year old is 4'10" already.

+1

Is it true that the Scion version has a much nicer interior?

I would absolutely love one sitting in garage. However a direly needed kitchen reno. took out that idea.

I wish this was around 10 years ago when I got my fun car(04 WRX) pre-kids.

Congrats!

Good thread about it. Very close. Myself growing up with Subaru would head in that direction by default.
