I learned last week that Schrade knives closed it doors last fall. I remember getting an Old Timer Stockman when I was in grade school, and learning how to try to sharpen and take care of it. I carried a Swiss Army knife after that for quite awhile and then a lock blade, but started carrying a pocket knife again as the multiple blades come in handy. The edge on the carbon steel on some of the pocket knives also seemed to hold up better than a lot of stainless. I have a couple of handfuls of Schrade knives that I've picked up here and there, and always wondered how they could charge so little so a product that had so much hand fitting to it. I guess they couldn't in the long run. Another reason I guess they closed down is that very few people seem to carry pocket knives these days, knives like stockmans, trappers, canoes, etc., none of the people that I know do, and the few who carry a knife seem to have a Leatherman of some sort, a Swiss Army knife or a small lockblade.

Anyway, my hat is off to the people at Schrade who made such nice, affordable products for so many years.

Thats a shame,I always liked Schrade,in fact I just started carring a Shrade Scrimshaw after losing my Craftsman stockman in the barn cutting strings off of some hay bales

I also carry a Spyderco and a Gerber multiplier. Your right about people not carrying knives anymore, when I was in school almost everyone I knew had a knife of some sort in thier pocket, but not anymore

. One book I used to have qouted the then president of Colonial knives. "A knife in a man's hand is like a jewel on a womans neck"

Most schools wont allow anyone to have a knife. When the staff get real paranoid kids have gotten in trouble for a plastic knife in their lunch bags.

And most big city offices don't really approve of anyone having a pocket knife. I don't yet know of any that have banned them yet, but HR is very uncomfortable about them.

It is definitely different than what I grew up with.

its dangerous to carry pointed sticks as well. so we better outlaw pencils and make everyone use crayons.

its annoying that i can no longer carry my leatherman into sporting arenas, airplanes and certain government buildings.

i upgraded to the crunch. its like having portable vicegrips. it is very handy.

I once got stabbed with a pencil in elementary school. I now have to deal with a fear of pencils and experience seizures whenever I see one. With the advent of the plastic pencils the occurance of these seizure has decreased. I think I will lobby to have pencils and pens completely banned from this great country due to the fact that they can and have been weapons.

But first, I think I will go buy some Crayola stock

I forgot about that kid that poked me with a stick when I was a child. This has also left lasting psychological effects on me. I will also be a proponent of eliminating all trees within the borders of the US. They are far too dangerous to allow the american public to be around them. I have even heard of trees performing suicidal acts in an attempt to kill a human being. It has been reported that they will completely up-root themselves and leap towards the ground where a human may be standing. The public needs to be protected from these extremely dangerous organisms.

A plea to the US government officials - please protect us from ANYTHING that has the potential to harm us in a direct or indirect way.

It's too bad an old company like schrade went out of business but I think the styles of knives have changes and schrade didn't update thier line. most are carrying combat style knives like spyderco and benchmade make. I also carried a stockman for awhile but prefered buck's similar knives better.
I have carried a pocket knife with me since I was 11, even to school. by law, in CA, the have to call the police and the kid has to go through a special program if he is caught with a knife, even if it was a small penknife in his backpack and was not threatening anyone with it.

I had my Schrade multitool stolen a couple of years ago and found it hard to replace in New Zealand, when I heard Schrade had gone under I thought I wouldn't be able too get another - but found one brand new on a local auction site for less than I paid for my original.Much better than a Leatherman...and it stays on my belt full time now!

so was i. it left a small piece of pencil "lead" embedded in my body. i am now suffering from the lingering effects of "lead" poisoning. where do i go to sue the school district for not protecting my welfare?

[my parents really were worried about lead (Pb) poisoning.]

I carried a Benchmade with an ATS-34 blade for awhile, I'm not a big stainless steel fan, but I picked it up for about half price on clearance. The one hand opening liner lock was handy. I was helping a friend move one day, we were tying stuff down with the poly 'truck rope', and the Benchmade stopped cutting fairly quickly. I finished up with a carbon steel stockman that I had in my pack, which was still cutting well when we finished. I've since picked up some Benchmades with the M2 tool steel, and while they take and hold a nice edge they're too big for daily carry.

A while back a girl was suspended from a local high school for having a small Swiss army knife in the first aid kit in her car. I had a P38 can opener taken from me at the airport, and when I stated that although it didn't cost much I'd had it for almost 30 years, the security clerk was nice enough to put in it a an envelope with my name on it and I picked it when I returned. Crazy how things have ended up. When people say that it's worth it for security I hand then a magic marker, tell them to think of it as a knife, and wherever they can mark me will be a 'cut'. I pick up a chair and tell them that they have to 'cut' me before I beat them into submission, and that I'll probably be breaking bones every time that I hit them. When I ask how they think that they'll fare, they don't like their odds. So much for controlling deadly weapons.
