The $6000 question for me is (since that's the price of a new engine) - can Schaeffers 7000 (5w30) handle the 98 Sienna engine for 10 to 12k OCI. I don't want to pay for an oil that doesn't meet this criteria.

Schaeffer's is an excellent product but I don't think anyone can tell you to put it in you Sienna and change it at 10K to 12K. All engines and applications are different. I would try it and pull a sample at 5K and have it tested. If it comes back good, continue using it. Who knows, the sweet spot for you Sienna might be 10K to 12K, but it might be 7.5K. No one knows without testing first. But make not mistake about it, Schaeffer's makes one of the best products out there.

Good advice Johnny.

I'm presently at 8k on a fill of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 with (now) two top-off qts of Mobil 1 0w40 (3 top-off qts of EP before that) - I was hoping to see a slowing consumption by moving to the 0w40 - I had topped off with one full qt of 0w40 and then continued to top off bit by bit with another qt of 0w40, but my consumption remained precisely what it was before - 1 qt in 1.7k miles. So I'm starting to itch to move off of Mobil 1 for one OCI and see if I can improve here (also, a dipstick sample at 4.2k showed 15ppm iron (above average - that was with 100% Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30) - I'll know more at my next sample in 2 or 3 months - but I'm wondering if I could see a decrease in iron wear as well w/ (eg) Schaeffers (which has moved into my top candidate position).

I heard from my friend Bob (see "Schaeffers !!!" post) that you can only be a Schaeffers rep if you have a store front -Bob said he would've become one otherwise. If you go to the Schaeffers web site, you can do a locater search for the rep (store) in your area.

Note - the BITOG member "salesrep" (he posted in the "Schaeffers !!!" post appears to be a Sch. rep.)

my ---- you are using a lot of oil... why Mobil 1?? why not maxlife blend? its thicker for one plus it MAY help your consumption problem.. you sure you dont have a leak anywhere?? you sure are wasting a lot of $ on oil...

Give us a little history on your van. How many miles, how is it driven. The Schaeffer's might help with the iron wear and you might need to go up in weight to help slow the oil consumption.

I just found out my good friend from college, his father is a Schaeffer's dealer. Talk about sweetness! He does not own a store or anything. He is just a farmer with a car business on the side.

The ONLY way for your question to be answered without someone just giving their opinion is for you to run it and have a used oil analysis done. When you have the results in your hands you won't have to take anyone's word for it. At this point, you don't know if any oil can be run that long in that motor. I will say that if intervals of 10K are possible in that engine Schaeffer oil can perform as well as any.

Agree 1000%

Wish there was more of this lately.. People looking for and stating facts instead of just because its this or that brand you can go this OCI with full protection. esp in extended OCIS

Schaeffers is an excellent brand, but in your motor it may not perform because we don't know *if* your motor has a problem or your driving style or where you live is a concern.

Take care, bill

Are you the original owner of this van? If not, do you know it's history before you? The consumption problem you have mentioned throws a red flag for that engine.

98 Sienna. Bought at 62k miles (bought from a couple who were both doctors - he's a high level Pediatric surg. - he stated the van saw mostly hi-way miles from Little Rock to Nebraska - he stated that he did very good maint. on oil chges - as low as 2k miles). Presently 140k miles on van (all Mobil 1 10w30, 0w30 and now EP - I would run 10w30 from March thru October (8-9k) and 0w30 thru the four months of winter (~4k)). Now planning to push all OCIs to 10-12k (w/ occassional used oil analysis). No leaks (not a drop on garage floor). No smoke (though I understand the cat. conv. can remove quite a bit of smoke). Present EP and 0w40 oil has 8k on it and is dark amber but not black. Looks good. But always smells a bit skanky soon after OC (like fuel & bad vapors - but Blackstone said I had no fuel dilution at 4.2k). Is an all day short tripper during school season (wife - 1 mile to school, back to help teachers, to piano lessons, and all groc., wal-mart, resturant, etc are 2 miles away).

Uses 1 qt in first 1k
Uses 1 qt in subsequent 1.7k.
Note, EP appears to have higher consumption than my previous Mobil 1 reg. line fills. I don't think I've ever seen this van drink 1qt in 1k before EP (and I think subsequent top-offs were > 1.7k).

Thanks for any advice.

Also, 4.2k UOA by Blackstone was all good except the 15ppm Fe. I think they stated avg as 9ppm. Blackstone gave me the green flag to go to 10k and resample.

I think it would be foolish to run Scaffers conventional oil for 10K-12K miles! We already know that the V6's and I4's in some years of Siena are prone to sludge/gelling issue's. To run the oil that long would not be prudent. If you want to run an oil 10K+ in that Sienna it had better be ester based like Redline,Motul 300V,Neo,VP Raceing etc.....$6000 for that V6 someone is rapeing you! I would love to see a used oil analysis for this vechile with it's current oil after 12K miles! We have seen a lot of V6 Toyota's from the sludge prone years on this site.

showing higher than "normal" iron wear huh? typical.......you are having some issues with that van and i would really look deep for a leak somewhere.. sometimes they are hidden? if its rear wheel drive look into rear main seal

John, in a few months I'll be posting a 10-12k UOA (with it's EP & 0w40 mix) - it's not quite fair though, since it had a 5 qt original EP fill, then 3 more qts of EP, then 2 more qts 0w40, and probably another 2 qts 0w40 before UOA. But I guess the wear metals will accumulate (if they're going to) regardless.

That's something I was struggling with on Schaeffers. It would be nice to have a known low wear oil, but with this engine, a PAO that can handle high heat is probably prudent (what about Sch. 9000 5w30?)

Mike, I blew an engine seal several months ago. After the Toyota mech. fixed it, he cleaned the engine and then ran it for "a long time" and put it on the rack and chked for leaks. He said there are "no leaks" in this engine. I'll go out later and look around it with a flash light and see if I see any oil moisture anywhere. It's front wheel drive btw.

$6000 was a guestimate on engine cost based on the multitude of gelled Sienna engine posts I've seen on the web over the years (starting immediately after I bought it.

) Actually 4.5k may be a better est.

I disagree about it being foolish to run 7000 series 10K miles. It has performed excellent in in many of my customer's cars out to that mileage and more. The used oil analysis will tell you if it can run that long in a Sienna.
Yeah, I used to say the same thing before I tested Schaeffer oils for myself. I thought nothing but Redline,Amsoil,Motul was good for 10-12K intervals but it just ain't so.
I am very aware of the sludge -prone problems some of the V-6 and 4cyl Toyota car engines had if intervals were extended too long. I was a tech for them during that whole episode and that's the reason I suggested doing used oil analysis to determine the intervals.
I sorta laugh when I hear someone say you have to have a full PAO or group5 based oil to run 10K intervalas. That's exactly what I told my Schaeffer rep when I first heard of his oils. He actually had to give me some oil to even get me to try it. The proof was in the analysis and it continues to impress me in my vehicles as well as my customers.
Some engines such as the Previa's 3.0 are not good candidates for long-intervals no matter what you pour in them including Polyol-Ester based oils.
I quit using a very popular group4&5 oil to switch to Schaeffer becouse it was consistantly showing better wear numbers so it isn't accurate to automatically assume your intervals and wear numbers will be better using full Pao or ester based oil. The 9000 series in particular has shown it's ability to turn in some very long intervals with great wear number to boot.
