Hi,

Has anyone tried the Schaeffer Supreme 7000 20w-50 Racing Oil on Turbo engines for day to day driving?

Does it work as well as a full synthetic as I have read that it performs pretty well even though it's a semi-syn.

Price wise, it's very reasonable.

Also, what is the drain interval for regular city and highway driving with the engine on boost ocassionally.

Appreciate some feedback on it.

Thanks.

What kind of turbo engine? Why do you want to run something so thick? Is it heavily modified or something? When you say racing oil, does that mean it has less detergents than their street oil (not that familiar with shaeffers racing oil)?

I live in the tropics and the ambient temperature is usually around 90 - 100F throughout the year. Hence, I am assuming a 50wt oil provides better protection.

I'm running an 08 wrx with 1.2 bar boost currently.

I'm looking at the oil in the link below.

Do all racing oils have lower levels of detergency?

I've been running Alisyn 0W-20 for 45,000 miles in Florida with 425 hp in my 06 Mitsubishi Evolution IX. Go to a lower weight oil, unless the motor is a race built motor with looser tollerances, than the factory.

I am under the impression that Turbo Charged engines usually consume more oil and also the high heat and rev causes lighter weight oils to break down faster.

Even though I'm on 5w-40 Shell Helix Ultra currently, most people have advised me to use 50w oils in the climate over here.

Just because it's hot outside does not make it necessary to use a 50-wt oil. The product you are using is an excellent product and more than capable of protecting your WRX. Mobil 1 0W-40 would be another good oil to choose. I personally would not use a 20W-50.

The turbo charged engine definately uses more oil, the lighter weight oils increase that usage. If you're running high boost (think 30lbs+) then that amount goes up even more. The lighter weight oil may breakdown faster,(depends on several things, keeping EGT's in check, fuel saturation, ect...) Since you'll be feeding the engine extra oil though out the drain period, it tends to keep itself relatively fresh. Best way for you to really know what's going on is to have the oil tested, to see how it it holding up and roll from there.

I would suggest searching the UOA forums on BITOG for WRX info. There are lots of them and some great feedback by knowledgeable subu gurus. This seems to be the only effective way to search BITOG:

Go to google search and type:

site:www.bobistheoilguy.com "insert your search word here"

If it was me I would use an ester based oil with a strong additive package. Just going by the UOAs I've seen. I have not researched this engine extensively but I believe many of the same factors that affect the VW/Audi turbos also affect the subi turbos.
