I have an '08 Chevy Silverado with the 5.3. Just curious if any other Chevy owners have an opinion on what brands of oil this particular engine likes? I heard that GM's oil is made by Mobil and is basically Mobil Clean. I usually run 4-6k OCI's. I have ran both dino and syn's. Dino's I've used: MC5000, PYB, Valvoline. Syn's: M1, PP, Castrol Syntech, M1 Truck & SUV.

My OLM decreases about 10% for every 1000 miles I drive, and if I were to follow the OLM, that would mean a 10k OCI! The OLM has indicated this regardless of dino or syn.

If you're really afraid of running such long intervals then send out a sample for analysis to see how things are really hholding up. I don't own a Chevy, but I have read numerous posts on here from people who have corroborated OLM intervals with UOA results.

Are you doing a lot of highway for the OLM to be allowing so long of an interval? Highway driving, depending on HOW you drive on the highway, is pretty easy on oil.

I have run Mobil 1 in Chevy trucks for years before I bought my current Nissan Frontier in which I also use Mobil 1. I have had excellent results using about 7000 mile drain intervals on the Chevy. Very clean internals, never burned any oil and a quiet running engine that gave great mpg. Use Mobil 1 EP to be on the safe side at 10,000 as its only a couple dollars more.

I always stay at 70 MPH on the highway,is that easy on the oil,or i could go faster then that?

The OLM is calibrated for dino oil, it doesn't have the ability to know if you add dino or synthetic oil to the sump. If you are concerned run the OLM to 20% that gives a nice mental margin of error for you.

I have one in my Jeep, probably not as good as the one in GM cars. I ignore it, or it would have me voiding my warranty, LOL. Last time it was triggered I had gone about 1 year 8 months and exactly 7748 miles, warranty voided on both accounts, miles and time. I stick to 6 month OCI to keep the warranty people happy, although this time I might run it a year. I have enough invoices for oil and filters to say it was changed in 6 months. I've driven about 2500 miles no less than 20 miles highway each trip in the past 6 months, no point in wasting good oil. JMO

I'm still not getting the thread title here. Are you not actually afraid of your OLM?

You have absolutely nothing to fear from Mobil-1, Mobil Clean, or for that matter, any oil that meets the specs stated for your engine, so long as you use the product within reason.

What kind of highway driving is not easy on the oil? I thought all highway driving was.

I just switched from M1 to PYB. Wasn't a real big fan of Pennzoil after trying it in my wife's Accord (too noisy), but so far, my Silverado seems to run a bit smoother with it. Maybe it's the new formula

. I will run a UOA next year to compare to M1. M1 UOA showed high lead.

M1s a fine oil use either there 5w30EP or there 5/10w30HM oil's and and a quality filter and follow your OLM plane and simple 10k no problem.

Manny,

I have the same engine as you do in my 08' Impala SS and use the OLM indicator along with Mobil 1 oil as a standard. Based on my driving habits my OLM tells me to do my OCI's every 6K which is fine for me. If you feel different in your situation then why not use M1 "extended" and just go the distance??? Now a days engines are a totally new breed of animal and so long oil changes will become prudent in the near future.

Good luck in your final decision

Your OLM actually has no way to tell whether you're using dino or syn. It's calibrated for whatever oil is specced by your owner's manual.

How much oil does your truck take?

Any oil can make an engine last 10K miles! (kidding!)

M1 isn't my absolute favorite...for one thing, all synthetics pour out of my leaky air-cooled engine, but I used it for years without any problems.

Nice provocative title. A case of overdone intelligence since nothing but trolling is coming out. Switch to Lubrication Engineers oil.

You must not live where idiots will pass any way they can, floor it up to the next pocket of congestion, finagle their way through, then repeat. Granted, I would say extended driving under these conditions on the highway at operating temp would be much better for the oil (and the engine and drivetrain) compared to the same style of driving in the city - stop and go - but still harder on the oil than cruising at a constant 70 mph.

I used the title, "scared of mobil 1?" because after reading many of the threads on this site, I had heard mixed reviews. I also saw a few pix of badly sludged engines run on M1.

I appreciate all the feedback.

Please show the pics of sludged engines that you can prove used M1. M1 oils are know for their excellant deposit control, as Honda and their HTO-06 spec chose M1 5-30 for FF in the RDX turbo because M1 5-30 is one of the very few oils that will meet that spec. Would you be a troll? Thought I should ask as your info is bogus.
