Okay,

I have to break down and buy something. I'm sick of the printer that I have and I don't want to spend another dime on buying toner for it. It's a pain in the butt because I need to make copies of some stuff and I also need to front to back copies/prints. Secondly I have a fax machine that is a hunk of junk. So I figure I will get an all in one.

So far I've looked at:
Cannon mf6550
HP LaserJet 3055

#1 it has to be laser.
It doesn't have to be color,
I would like it to be able to do legal sized
It would also be cool if it has great scanning capabilities since I want to scan in all of my hard copy photo's.

If you have any review sites or suggestions please let me know.

I'm not unwilling to spend up to $600 if it will do me or last for the next 5 years or so.

Thanks

ms, I steer clear of ANY printer from HP. I used ONLY HP's for years (not only at home, but for my networks), but their quality really is lackluster now. My recommendations are, for laser printers, only Xerox, for non-laser printers: Canon.

I've owned 3 different Canon's at home and cant' kill any of them!

Sprintman may offer you a different opinion as he's "Mr HP".

Man I have no idea on how to compare these things.

Jeez. I wish there was something that you could compare with.

Also have to look at the price of replacement toners?

I do like the idea of using an ethernet connection, I could hook it to my my wireless router so I don't have to have one more thing hooked to my laptop.

Get an all in one laser canon; you can't go wrong.

I was looking at the canons. The mf6550 is the lowest cost one, but then TnS said something about xerox. Now looking at the

Xerox PE120i For about $600 or so.

Thats kind of funny. My HP scan/print/copy has been fantastic... and thats after owning a Canon and Epson before. The HP cartridges have new heads in them, so the printer lasts forever. Canon heads clog, and then die, even though the ink is cheaper, and by then its time for a new printer.

However, I must admit, my friend just got a Brothers all in one with fax that works VERY well. I recommend them now for people needing fax.

Ewps, saw you needed laser, that changes everything... Well, I guess go with something else. HP laser probably Does suck

Remember, jack of all trades = master of none. Do any of these all-in-one jobs use laser toner cartridges? The ones I've noticed in the stores all seem to use inkjets, and if you think replacing toner is costly and a pain, wait till you're replacing inkjet cartridges a lot more often. Most all-in-ones are geared toward occasional or light household use, and I would also therefore doubt you'd get 5 years out of one.

Slightly off topic, but I just replaced my Dell inkjet printer after only 8 months' use. I think I used it a little (okay, a lot) more than Dell intended. Got the identical Lexmark version, since it was cheap enough, and I can use the same cartridges and keep refilling them as I've been doing.

For copying, I bought a Sharp AL-800, which does all I need. Just started refilling its toner cartridges myself too, heh heh. The whole copier with a starter cartridge was well under $300 with a special promotion at Staples. The other major office supply stores had nothing but inkjet all-in-one units at the low end. I was replacing my venerable Ricoh LR-1, which was actually a rebadged Canon and finally had given up the ghost after 13 years and some 50,000 copies, and I wanted a regular copier using toner that could copy legal-sized pages (8-1/2 x 14").

MSparks, keep in mind as well that if any one part of the all-in-one malfunctions, the whole machine will probably become useless until it is repaired. Probably best to keep it all separate. If my scanner goes on the fritz, it won't affect my printer. If my printer bites the dust again, it doesn't affect my dedicated copier. And so forth.

OK, I don't know anything about this product personally, but it looks like a good deal if it will fit your needs. Looks like the approximate cost for toner is about 3 cents per page. Staples had it on sale for $200 and there was a $50 rebate, which lowered the final cost to $150. I doubt you will find anything else that inexpensive. It's a SHARP AM-900 monochrome laser printer/fax/scanner/copier. Staples webpage:

TNS i have a Lexmark P 6250 (POPS) but the new HP's arec winning every review. They spebt a billion $ U.S on new printhead technology ad are killing it. PC Authority Sept 2006 compared 10 all-in-ones and the HP Photosmart 3110 cleaned up. Canon Pixm MP500 second and Canon Pixma MP170 third with Epson Stylus Photo RX650 fourth. I got a HP Deskjet 2360 free as I sold some stuff and for my daughter it is brilliant. HP have reset the boundarie with their new technology. From ordinary to briiliant i one step.

I'd love to get a laser cannon and mount it on my car's fender. Does Office Depot sell fusion-powered batteries for it?

That'd be great for traffic!

we have 2 b/w HP LaserJet printers (1012 and 1022), and they've been superb. our old cannon inkjet (about 4 yrs old) is collecting dust. The HP's are fast, great on toner saving, and are real work horses (we're both in college so we print a LOT!!). Never has either of our printers failed to work. They may not look very fancy, but are VERY dependable, imo.

I personally don't like Canon. Their printers use huge amounts of ink and cartridges don't last long and are expensive. I have always heard good words about HP.

On another note. I use Snapfish.com instead of a home rig for pictures. Cheap, reliable, and you can get Matt finish.

I owned a Canon 6000 printer for close to 7 years before it died. I have a HP 2610 color printer, copier, scanner, fax. It has been trouble free for the last six months I have owned it. It also does color photographs from the camera memory cards. I paid $259 for it at CompUSA if I remember right.
Lucky for me I live near an Island Inkjet store or I'd go broke if I had to buy the ink cartridges from HP.
