waht is wrong with people on the road???

first SIL 200 Celica GT, stick shift, 184K miles, pretty good conditions id totaled (insurance decision) by a Chevy Astro. it got bumped twice. got pushed under a new nissan rogue. i got to drive her back home since car wasn't starting anymore. the older guy with the astro, was on the phone the whole 1.5 hour i was there for the troopers to finish paper work. he didn't even bother to take the phone from the ear when 2 troopers with hats on and very official attire handed him the paper work and some traffic violation/ticket!!!???

yesterday, on the way home, traffic was really backed up. after 3 miles of 5 mph, see a 90's corolla bumped by a chevy avalanche and under another nisan rogue (???)

this morning, guy takes a REALLY large right turn, no signal, right into a minding-his-own-business-slow-pace byciclist. he was still checking his phone after the guy got bumped!!!???

so is it the fault of nissan rogue or of fumes of glues found in today's smarts phones???

sorry, i know i may be an oddball, i work in IT, but my personal phone is a really old/doesn't know much brick. i could drop it on hard floor, step on it (i'm 240# ish), drive the car on top of it (don't ask me how i know) and still works.

And people wonder why I have a Volvo as my daily driver...

Yep, been sandwiched in that car (hit from behind when interstate traffic came to a complete stop and pushed into the car in front of me).

what's worst with SIL car's is she was completely stopped.
also this happened in a construction zone. 4 lanes coming to 1.
nothing moved there quicker than 20 mph.

the 2 bumps where the result of:
-bang first bump
-older gentlemen panic and pushed wroom pedal not brakes
-BANG second bump, push, "sandwich"

Yah the commute up Rt 3 to Boston sees a rush hour 3 car accident 3 days out 5. I was the "jam" in a sandwich back in Aug. Traffic accordion-ed. I stopped ,but the girl behind me didn't. '11 Transit Connects folded up pretty good. A low speed hit that didnt even give me a sore neck. All 3 cars were very much drivable.

I don't know if it's just because my commute time and route have changed again recently, but I have been seeing a lot of retarded driving lately.

My biggest gripe recently has been unsafe merging on the interstate. Why people think trying to enter 60-70 MPH traffic at 35 MPH is going to work out well is beyond me. The ramp is there for a reason, use it.

Also, going comatose in intersections is another issue. Stopping in the middle of an intersection to rethink your route or to just go into a coma isn't a good idea. Stopping on a green arrow is really inconsiderate.

Then there's the slow drivers who get in the left lane of the interstate and abruptly brake for no reason, or brake going uphill. They probably cause the sandwiches.

Part of the problem is the "driving is a right" mentality. It's really easy to get a license here. Nobody fails a driving test. People don't get licenses (initially) in the US simply because they are too lazy to put the very minimal amount of effort into it. That's a gen Y/millennial thing (I am gen Y). Any 16 year old US citizen who wants to drive a car doesn't have to do much at all to get a license.

Secondly, many cars attempt to isolate the driver from the road/actual driving experience. These days driving is about noise cancelling systems, noise enhancement systems, touchscreen touching and syncing, Cue this, UConnect that, Sync your phone to this, do anything but drive. To most people, driving is a chore, and of course automakers want to appeal to most people. So they push the car as a living room on wheels that's just like playing with UVerse on the couch at home.

I'm up in Chicago quite a bit, and I've yet to experience the bumping traffic shenanigans. I'm really surprised there isn't more horn honking like you see in the NYC movies when the city is in grid lock. I was under big stress cruising through on a Sunday, thinking everyone drove like my dad (you were getting pushed off the road if you moved too small) It ended up not as bad as I thought.

On that Sunday in the city, the second day I had my Fiat, I drove up there just to see how it was in the city, and while looking for the swarming people and bicyclalists, I turned right on red in between the hours of 7am-7pm and was pulled over by Chicago's finest.

I'm getting to the point now where I just pull over and let people go by me.

Why should I drive 50 MPH on a city street just because the person behind me wants me to?

For most people, driving is something they do while doing other more important things. This isn't new, but the things that distract them are.

+1

As someone who has been T-boned by a careless driver, I take offense to someone who is driving while distracted. If I drive past someone and see them texting, putting on make up, etc., I WILL let them know in one way or another that I am acknowledging their lack of respect for my safety. I text on my phone as much as the next 20 something year old, but NOT while I'm driving. NO text message is worth someone's life. Getting caught texting while driving should result in loss of license, that will make people change their ways. Those who are using smart phones while driving usually have the cash (or their parents do) to pay the fine and go on doing what they are doing.

Include talking on the phone while driving as well. Unless you are phoning in a 911 emergency you should IMMEDIATELY lose your license.
