Saved an engine from a Slick50 "treatment"

It was a bit awkward though as it was a present from my brother-in-law for my father.
I saw the bottle and I had to laugh and asked: what's this?
My fatehr said: that's for my car.
So I said: that stuff is NOT going into your engine, over my dead body.

My sister was a kinda upset, so I explained a bit about oil and that the claims made by Slick50 are just rubbish.
It's better to invest in good oil.

The 700ml Slick50 bottle was pretty expensive too, 39 Euro's!

My brother-in-law sorta accepted my comments and said: well.. I'll take it back to the shop and ask for a refund.

My fathter drives a Toyota Corolla, MY'98, 1.6 engine, 165k km, and its running on Shell Helix 0w30 now.

Oh well...

That's a tough situation. You either upset your sister and brother-in-law, or your father dumps junk into his car. I've heard the new formulations of Slick 50 probably aren't destructive like the old stuff, but it's still a waste of hard-earned money. Your brother-in-law deserve credit for good intentions with his gift.

By the way, that's a nice oil selection with the Shell Helix Ultra, although my knowledge of this Euro brand is limited.

I agree. There is no more Teflon in Slick-50. It is made/sold by SOPUS. They have too much money and good reputation to sell something that will destroy your engine.

Get your brother in law to trade the .7L bottle in on a full oil change of Helix and a filter. That shouldn't cost much over 39 Euro should it?

Slick 50 won't hurt an engione at all - according to Johnny, there isn't even any Teflon in it, at all. It's just a boatload of AW adds in a 10w30 oil.

.....but it's still a waste of money. 39 Euro's is what, about $50??? It sells for between $17-$30 here.

I was not going to let a perfect fill of GRP IV/V 0w30 get ruined with 10w30 and some additives.
To be honest I didn't know there was no Teflon in Slick50 anymore.

Maybe I could have been a bit more diplomatic.
It was a gift afterall....

The irony (isn't it ironic?.. no rain on your wedding day ISN'T irony Alanis, its just bad luck) is that they are both Shell products.
You buy cheap low quality oil and think it needs a boost (from Shell) or you get the good stuff... from Shell.

The Helix Ultra 0w30 was some leftover I would liked to have used in my own car (S2000) but it's no longer made and I didn't have enough left for the initial fill & top-up over the months.
So I used SSO.
