Pulling the 01 saturns engine today, making a list of parts.

On rock auto i see DNJ gasket set $76 , an enginetech set $88, and a victor reinz set for $134.

Worried about the DNJ stuff. Is victor reinz good quality?
I can't find a felpro complete set.
Thanks

Very good quality gaskets and seals, use them with complete confidence. Stay clear of DNJ and that other off brand garbage, they are not worth a P hole in the snow.

I saw that but its not a complete set with rear main seals etc.
I may just get the victor reinz or piece buy the felpro.

Thanks! i'll check those out!

Engine will be pulled tomorrow, I'm on call so i don't know how much i'll get into engine teardown until next weekend.

I never rated FelPro that highly, I had one of their head gaskets fail on my Triumph and will not use them again.

To me, a quality head gasket is a must. The other gaskets I might cheap out on.

Why ont up grade a cheaper set with a Victor Reinz head gasket?

Oh no, i'm not going through all this to reuse the head bolts lol, its getting new ones!

I'm going to use Trav's trick and cut a couple of lines in one of the old bolts with a dremel. This will be used to clean/chase the threads.

It has close to 200k and due to the piston ring design and whatever maintenance by the previous owner, it uses oil, about a quart in 800 miles. It runs great, and has 0 visible smoke. But now is a good time as my son is finishing undergrad, and we want this car to get him through law school.

Will send the head out for valve grinding and new seals. Depending on the bore, i will either drill oil drainback holes in the existing pistons and clean and rering, or if i have to bore it, new pistons( sealed power pistons have the oil drainback holes in them.)

New timing set, and of course having the machine shop check the crank mains/rod journals for new bearings.

New clutch will also be installed, new water pump because we are there, and all new engine trans mounts/dogbones.

Sweet s series are great cars. Its possible that theres a richpin video that could help you (even if you're experienced he probably has small tips that could help)

Thanks, his car has been, still is great. Gets 40 mpg hwy with the A/C off. Its just burning enough oil now, that if he slips and forgets to check , it will be ruined for rebuilding.

Sounds like a good car. With new gaskets and basically a rebuild and clutch that car is good to go for a long time.
