Old Samsung TV cycles off and on. Disconnected everything. Disabled all remotes. I'm guessing something on the board. Does not have physical on switch. Won't stay on long enough to do anything in settings.

Looking for a 24" for a small room. Who makes a good simple one? Heard about troubles with Roku ones. Probably going with Samsung again but open to suggestions.

They all have software. Buy the cheapest one you can find as long as it's not a Fire TV.

Currently have 2 Samsung 32” and they good. Had a Samsung 40”, my first big flat screen, only lasted 7 years. Screen got stripey, maybe hit with a surge, didn’t scare me off the brand. Got a 49” Sony 9-10 years ago I think. Beautiful picture. Had a Vizio in between. Returned it to Best Buy. Picture no comparison to the Samsung. That’s when I got the Sony.

My wife likes her Fire TV, me, not so much. I must say, she does get a pretty good picture.
I'm a Samsung guy. Even though their OS sucks pretty badly. Why do I need to press the home button 3 different times to get to the home page?
Gotta skip that art work subscription of course.

Look at the capacitors. If they are “puffed up” they need to be replaced. Might also be the power board. Pretty sure that TV can be fixed but probably not for much cheaper than buying a new one.
Was thinking capacitor. Will look into it after I get a replacement.

I'm a Samsung guy, my son likes LG. They all look good in the store, but I bought one of the cheaper brands for my mother and the TV could not be set bright enough for her 90 year old eyes to see with daytime light coming through the windows. Had to return it for a samsung.

I've vacillated between a few brands and really like Sony. IME, Sony isn't worth the added costs. Have to say, overall, Samsung has been best to me thus far. We have had Samsung 60" in basement, 70" in family room, and oldest is a 50" in master. It's been multiple years and they have been solid. I'd pick Samsung if it were me.

Settled on Samsung 32" 6000F smart TV. That's almost all you can buy is smart TV. More on that later. Talk about inten@#$%sification! Since we already had ROKU device we opted out of the smart. Way too invasive. The fication does not end in dumb mode. No RCA input for playing DVD or Blue Ray. (can get HDMI Y cord and adapters) Say you want to select captions, you scroll down through a drop down about 10 places until you get CC.

I was curious about non smart TV's. Westinghouse brand sells them. Made in China.

A day in the life of an En ...

Your TV if it has screws in the back should be repairable. My twelve year old Dynex finally wouldn't turn on with the remote nor the switch. I looked up the part and the sensor and switch is available for replacement.

Yeah, I believe the problem is in the mainboard. No physical switch. Found one sort of fix on YouTube (a workaround). Will search YT for more info. I had to include "mainboard" in the search terms to get beyond all the button pushing suggestions.

Bought the old one in question from Fry's. Probably about 20 years ago. Unlike the newer ones it is very difficult to dig into. Remove the screen, remove the next thing and on and on. Junking it. New ones I saw on youtube you just lay screen side down, remove the back cover and everything is exposed. I understand that replacing caps usually lasts a year and I am thinking what's wrong that is blowing the caps.

The other Samsung is a lot bigger. Comes on with audio so I could hear the weather report. Probably the display screen is bad. Watched YT video where the guy places tape on some of the ribbon cable contacts and hey presto you have video. Color was not quiet right so in settings he increased the color value for a better view. Wonder if that increases the voltage. I imagine that wil get you down the road a good while.

Does larger screen = less life?

TVs these days are too cheap to throw good money to bad fix one thing today for a tail light guarantee. Sony and LG are the grown up choices for the price of TVs unless you have special space requirements I wouldn't bother with 24" go minimum 32"

The newer Samsung's are stupid simple to work on. Cost of capacitor very low. However I would not trust it to last more than a year. That said I just hate sending more stuff to the landfill. No way to reasonably recycle it. Most people will just opt for the landfill over recycling if available.

Back in the Plasma days 2008 ish I spent BIG BIG money on the best Panasonic GT series TV, it was thousands $$ as I recall. And going way back to 1995 I purchased the best of the best a Sony 32" XBR squared for a BIG $3,600 in 1995 money! That was years ago and I find I watch more video now on my Mac or iPad/ PC so gone are the days of me having to have the best TV. If I had a theater room or did lots of TV watching I would still buy I top end TV...

I suggest Go to Best Buy and look around in that Magnolia store / section and decide If you are a high end TV kinda customer, IF not go to Walmart Early Black Friday and buy a BIG, Inexpensive Roku TV doorbuster!

I kinda like the inexpensive RoKu TV's Its simple and works and If you buy a RoKu brand sound bar is all just plug n play and I like that simple RuKu remote that is EZ to replace and simple to operate. I was never a fan of those Google TV's and Fire is Okay but my family likes that RoKu TV format best.
