Sae 30 for 99 Isuzu?

Looking at the owners manual for our 99 Trooper it recommends sae30. Then 10w40-15w40 and even 20w50!

Wonder why the straight weight recommendation in a 1999 model year car?

Wondering if it would burn less sae 30 than the currant 5w30 that's in it?

I was going to put 15w40 in it but now I'm rethinking that choice.

I know with my 97 Rodeo the HLA's would start slapping away with 10w30 and the recommended fix was Mobil1 0W30. Strange that they would still be recommending a thicker oil after they discovered that particular problem. Far as I know those were powered by the same 3.2 weren't they?

Living in the desert SW, I'd try 20w50.

ran a 99 rodeo for 200k on 10w30, I ran my 89 isuzu 2.6 on everything from 5w30 to 15w50

I'd run a 5/10w30 and never stress about it.

Try the SAE 30 and see if it burns less. There is a possibility it would decrease comsumption. In a 99 Isuzu it would work perfect.

You don't think it would take too long to pump up to the cams?

Ahh, no HLA problems like the 3.2 had then.

In your climate I would try 15w40 .
The only experience I have with sae 30 and 15w40 was in my boat which was aways run fairly hard ! coming in after a good run and idling down the engine it was always noticeably quieter on the 15w40.
Now does that mean it was better than the 30 who knows I just felt more comfortable with the 15w40.

My guess is the SAE spec is from the original spec overseas. Maybe 5W-30 wasn't common in the outback or Middle Eastern desert.

You could run SAE 30, but I am guessing the base stock is not that great, and its not very inexpensive either. I would probably go 15W-40 in this case, or spring for M1 0W-40 if you want to go fancy.

Back in the old days it was taken that "you can't beat straight 30 weight for protection". I new an excellent mechanic in the 1990's that used and recommended 30 weight. If it's above freezing.

Define reputable?

Valvoline, Warren, and Mag1 all still sell it.

Walmart sells supertech sae 30 cf-2 1 gal and 1 quart HD30 but i haven't seen it in stores and rotella t1 sae 30 in gallon jugs in the US. Don't know if they sell an equivalent in Canada.

Oddly enough a big grocery store chain called heb sells high detergent sae 30 and 40 in every store along with pennzoil and other auto fluids and at 4.41 a quart it's not stupidly priced. If I needed to top up I'd happily pour that high detergent monograde 40 in.

Those are reputable. I was just thinking that it’s such a rarely used product that hardly anyone would make it. I think that a higher quality 5w30 would still be a better option though.

The Pennzoil oil finder tool lists 10w-30 for the 1999 Trooper. Don't see how you could go wrong with that.
