By the time we got a taxi anywhere near a million miles, the engine was the least of the vehicle's problems. You can only throw money at a transmission and suspension so many times. The body gets terrible.

Rest assured, if someone is determined enough to take a vehicle to a million miles, they certainly will.

More than zero..... Which was my point. In fact I bet we won't be seeing any 500,000 mile 2020 Civics either..... the waterlike "0w12" won't provide enough protection.

(Note: I'm making the assumption Honda really is developing/testing a 0w20 as reported above.)

You bet? How about waiting for some actual test results and long term studies before placing your bet?

I bet people were saying the same thing about 0w30 and 0w-20 grades several decades ago, calling them "waterlike." Yet, I don't see any studies showing these oil grades to be the cause of engine failures on modern cars designed for it. As was stated by Garak, it is typically some other part of the car that makes it not worth keeping. Engine lubrication isn't the issue.

Ahhh, how refreshing to hear proper design concepts in this day when (to quote them), manufacturers are spending more time in mixed/boundary lube regimes, for "normal" operation...simply, thy are removing the customer's head room. Not creating the pile of failed engines, as some would posit.

Haven't done the math (it's a big afternoon), but you are correct. Increasing bearing surface area and reducing radial clearances to provide film thickness IS increasing drag...in the bearings....I don't think it's zero sum...might play that math over the holidays if I get really bored.

They may be making up for it in piston friction or somewhere else. Oil pump drag is pretty low, and probably better managed with variable displacement not viscosity.

I already heard Honda say the new 0w16 is merely adequate (versus superior which is what they isually say). That likely means "adequate" to survive the 150,000 mile warranty but not enough to create 500,000 or million-mile Civics

Also 0w30 creates a boundary between surfaces. 0w20, 16, 12 does not. They heavily rely on anti wear additives

I will say the world has changed when a big European manufacturer recommends 0w-20 or 5w-20 for that matter in all their cars. Or has any oils of those viscosities meet their specs.

I'm not saying Euro manufacturers know it all. I realize they also run slightly warmer, and they try to cover many climates.

I just think things would have really changed, when they also recommend a 20 weight. We shall see if and when it happens. It would be an interesting change. Again, not saying it's bad or good.

For me, I don't see a value in the small fuel economy improvements of a 20 weight or lighter compared to a 30 weight. Indeed, I have no problem using 40 weight.
