So, preparing for a big trip with the family, I decided to change the oil before we go.

6.5L of M1 0w40. Mann filter.

This was a really easy oil change! I didn't bother to try and use jacks, I just drove it up on the curb and reached under.

This oil had roughly 3,000Km on it. Oil consumption was nil. Roughly 6.5L came out of the engine. That's a lot better than I was expecting!

Mileage on car is now 143,293Km.

Am I disrespecting the Castrol Gods with this?

Thats how I usually change the oil....right up on the sidewalk, no ramps, jacks or jack stands. Reach under and drop and drain the old oil right into the oil pan....no spills and no frills...change the filter....fill up the crankcase with fresh oil.... and off we go.

Works great and no hassle....just look out for the cops who may have something to say....just to justify their job.

Not much of an issue here. They are nice guys for the most part.

Cool! I wish I was ther to take part in this event. My grandson bought a 2002 Camry today(with my help). He lives in Fl. but I'm just itchin to be there for his first M1 oil change.

I like to let it sit and drain for a bit, and I don't own an extractor, LOL!

Had all three kids out there with me too, LOL! 3, 5 and 7. Showing them how to do an oil change for the millionth time

I would have use Castrol since it says so on the caps!!! Castrol had some input on building that engine and is the "best" oil for that app...

You'll love this part: the car is WAY quieter on the Mobil 1. I mean SIGNIFICANTLY. I wouldn't have expected that, given the high HTHS of the BMW 5w30. But I was frankly quite shocked.

Not that noise means much, but everybody likes a quiet motor

This is one of those engines that originally spec'd 10w60, then got new rings the next year, and then magically was OK with the generic (3.5 HTHS) BMW 5w30 in it. A LL-01 oil.

There have been rod bearing issues with this engine family, even using the "uber l33t" 10w60 in them, so I figure I'll try something different

LOL!

And hey, it meets the BMW LL-01 spec, so it is OK for the application.

And of course I'm a bit of a Mobil 1 [censored], but nobody on this board knows that right? heeehhehehe

Interesting. I add a smiley to SHOW that I'm kidding and you take it as you did.

WOW...

I don't know. And that's a first for me. This engine is known to be hard on oil, has a relatively high power density, decent sized sump (6.5L), and is a semi-dry sump setup. And to add even more fun to the mix, it has an Alumasil block!

This oil was pretty dark with only 3,000Km on it. I'm not bothering to UOA it, but I WILL UOA the M1 0w40. I'll probably dump it at 5,000Km and do a UOA, see how much life was left in it, what the contamination is like....etc.

This engine and car are completely uncharted territory for me. So it is all a big fun learning adventure as I go

Can't have too much fun with all three kids in the back, and a trunk full of luggage, LOL!

I'll be interested to see what it turns in for fuel economy compared to the same trip in the Expedition.

Kudos for bucking the TWS trend. As much as I love that oil, I long suspected it was unnecessary for this engine under most usage.

Do keep an eye on your oil temps in summer, and good call on the UOAs. Looking forward to hearing more!

I'm not much on the noise issue, but my son that lives in Fl. was up here last month in his new Jeep Wrangler 4 door V6. It only had 3400 miles on the FF, but he changed to M1 5-20 while here and commented it did smooth out his engine a tad.
