Rust proofing choices

The 2018 is due for another round of rust proofing since its been quite a few years from the last time it was sprayed with RP-342. Going to do he best I can to power wash it (drive way, ramps) but surely won't have it super clean... Tryign to decide between RP-342 aerosol vs bulk vs switching to woolwax. I've used fluid film extensively on my 2011 and its worked really well, but I do have the greasy mess... the 2018 is just much nicer to work on with the cleaner RP-342.

I'd also like to fog inside the frame rails which will be MUCH easier with WW/FF using my current spray guns. Probably could use them with the RP342 bulk fluid if I cleaned them up, though.

I’m testing out the Blaster Suface Shield to see how it lasts. I am not in an area of high corrosion so it may be all I need but I put it on my 4Runner and on my Polaris SXS. I will have to look into the Rep-342, I have never heard of it.

I would choose anything waxy/oily over the cosmoline.

I have been using Surface Shield going on 2 years now and and it seems stay on. The 1 gallon bucket is going to last a while! I'll touch up with a spray can in a couple areas in the fall.

I wouldn't power wash the applied areas but a regular car wash should be fine.

Rubberized undercoat may work well in California.
In the Rust Belt, it's a recipe for disaster.

Rubberized products seem best at trapping water and salt next to the metal causing the car to rust even faster than without.

Interesting. I figured if the undercarriage was prepared and then sealed with something like 3M it wouldn't trap anything.

It gets a rock chip that penetrates the rubber and the paint underneath, then rust starts creating a small gap between the paint and rubber, and then as the void spreads, the rubber just holds salty moisture against the body and the rust spreads faster, and unseen....

My last Focus looked pretty good underneath, I sprayed oiled it a couple times, sprayed spots that were rusty every tires change, but there was large patches of factory sound deadener under the floor pans, and rust spread unseen from some chips, until little pieces of deadener were peeling down, but by then there was no metal left in spots.

I think it would work good on a smooth flat surface that you could inspect often and repair any chips, but for a car, unless you have a lift and lots of spare time to wash and inspect the underbody every couple months. Its going to to do more damage than help in many cases.

The rubberized and asphalt type(ziebart) are both trash.
looks good while its rotting away underneath.
FF should be ok over rp-342.. and a little dirt wont bother it.
Just the mess if you have to work under there afterwards.. but
better than working on rusty parts.

I use woolwax in black and it lasts for years. You just have to touch it up in wash areas. Do not use rubberized undercoating, it will rust out underneath it.

Same with waxy products. Oil and lanolin IMO are better in that regard.

That would make sense.....but

the moment a rock flings up and chips something, the seal is broken and salt water will invade, and rust ensues under the coating, where you cant get to it.

No coating, and yearly application of a preservative is the only way to keep rust away for a daily driver, IMO

Personally my conclusion after trying most products is that RustMort or POR15 on any existing rust and then FluidFilm over everything including inside frame holes and doors works exceptionally well with good longevity and excellent results for rust prevention.

Really wanted to go with RP342 again since it’s held up well and is quite a bit cleaner to work on- plus I don’t want to be constantly respraying this truck too…. Not sure it’s the best bet at this point though. Great shape for a Michigan truck but even after power washing with a heavy degreaser all the underbody dirt is still there. There is a little rp342 left actually and I feel like this dirt is embedded.
