Running daily/track car on street w/ 15W50

Thanks for all of the quick replies, this forum is great!

I am going to see if I can find some 5w50 before Sunday. Either way, I'll make a mental note to report back with engine oil peak temps and ambient temps.

I've run M1 15W-50 in several cars/trucks over the winter. Never a problem. I used to use 20W-50 back in the day and it was fine in the winter too - the M1 is decidedly thinner than that. I also used M1 15W-50 in 600hp SBC road race cars with excellent results. It's available at Walmart cheap - you'll be fine.

-2 COLD? LMAO!

Heck yeah! Haha down here when it gets below 60F people are busting out with their winter coats! :P

Hey guys, wanted to give you an update on the track day. Ambient temps were 75-80 degrees. I ran Mobil 1 15w50 overfilled .75qt (to the dot and number 1 on the dipstick).

My notes:
-Temps got near 240F near the end of the track day.
-After the first run, about 25 minutes, I got the dreaded lifter tick and some vanos growl (vanos just overhauled with rattle and gasket kit from [censored]). A helpful guy from a local BMW performance shop topped the oil back up with Motul 5w-40 and the tick went away quickly. He had negative things to say about Mobil 1, like it was "too thin" and not as good as Castrol or Motul for my car.

-Normal around town temps are 210 and about 220 on highway.
-Now on cold start I get the low pressure light for a few seconds. Oil pressure is indicated on cold start at about 55-60 when driving away.
-Warmed-up idle oil pressure is about 15 psi. Under load about 50-55 psi.

-Zero oil leaks.

Your thoughts? Thanks again for all the input.

Interesting.
So max oil temps of 240f. Unless you've got huge bearing clearances do you really need a 50 grade.
I'm using a 40 grade in my charger. I've seen oil temps of 265f and at those temps I've got 19psi at idle and 52psi at 70mph,rpm are near 2000.
So if you've got low oil pressure at idle is that all the time,or just when oil temps are at the 240f.
A 20w-50 might help idle pressure when hot, though I don't know if the difference between 15w-50 and 20w-50 would be all that apparent.
What about a straight sae50 grade. If your only driving the vehicle in warm weather it would be fine at cold start.
A 5w-50 will exasurbate the low pressure at idle at elevated oil temps in my opinion.
I wonder if an hdeo would work here.

+1.

240*F is quite a moderate oil temperature. Corvettes and Nissan Z-cars see 280+ at the track. Makes me wonder if 50wt is needed as well. My experience with Castrol 5w50 in my WRX is that it shears quite badly, I suspect M1 15w50 does not shear as much. Given the moderate temperatures, the Castrol would likely be fine.

Your friend from the BMW club may be ignorantly extrapolating from shear prone Mobil ILSAC oils to the rest of the brand.

Seems these engines are a bit finicky, so I don't have much advice for you. Maybe try Redline 5w40? Should stand up to track duty at least as well as M1 15w50, but might work better on the street and help the VANOS behavior.

SCCA GT-1/Trans Am class??

Yes, exactly. Mostly GT-1, but I ran one Trans-Am race in each car. (Camaro & Oldsmobile)

M1 15w-50 is perfect for highly loaded engines. It's cold flow characteristics are considerably better than Dino 20w-50.

I use it I'm my boosted vehicles here in Florida. Year round. And, yes it gets to freezing temps in winter.

I also have very good results with this oil in my air cooled generators and water pumps.
