I’m a fan of these guys. However, they seem to lack some fundamental knowledge of oil filter construction and what constitutes quality. They believe WIX is King…..

Watched it just this AM. Hey Sherwood the openings in the center of the filter are 'louvers'. Neither of those filters or the oil caused the problem with the Alfa. He's a gifted mechanic but sometimes the best can be wrong.
I normally like this guy but his filter and oil knowledge are not good. The worst part is he had Premium Guard in the shop showing the quality differences compared to Wix when they took over Napa Gold. He doesn’t even realize Wix and Mopar are both made by M+H. Black glue of death and all.

Watch the video and had to laugh. I get the impression that Sherwood was expecting the Ecogard to be absolute trash when he opened it and kind of looked surprised when it was not. I will agree with the part of the video that the FIAT derived Multi-Air engines are sensitive to certain oil filters and oil used as I have owned two of them in the past.

I watched that video last night, and also noticed that Sherwood seemed totally out of his area of expertise, when trying to describe the components of the filters, and was grasping at straws when trying to explain the differences, and if they could account for the problem on the Fiat.
Yeah, when he called the ADBV a “gasket” I just shook my head. He also didn’t seem to understand the difference between a nitrile and silicone ADBV. I do think they’re very good and competent mechanics and troubleshooters, but oil filter knowledge and construction seems out of his wheel house for sure.
Read the comments on the video for some extra laughs. Absolutely clueless people in there…..
I will say there is almost zero oil/filter training at the factory level as well as ASE. The exact reason I started visiting and learning at BITOG in 2005 was I knew as a former tech I wasn’t properly informed. I saw a lot of oil related things inside of engines I couldn’t explain even back then. I also started cutting open oil filters around 1995 because I was curious.
Man this dude is really scary ignorant about these filters.. He finally figured out a while back about the PG Napa filters and I believe he had a PG rep in and he finally got behind them and was sort of starting to understand about these filters.. Now he is evaluating a lower level Ecogard and he has no idea that it's a Premium Guard product plus he has no idea that Ecogard has the nicer premium filters with synthetic blend media plus silicone adbv and gasket.
Sherwood needs to learn the most important thing about a filter is the first line of the doctor's Hippocratic Oath; "First, DO NO HARM!". Unfortunately Mann & Hummel are the WORST offenders in that area, even more so than the departed FB Fram/Champion Labs!

He also doesn't realize that media pleat depth can make concluding the total media area by just looking at it deceiving. It needs to be measured. The diameter of the center tube affects the pleat depth.

In my experience they seem to lack fundamental knowledge on lubrication in general. I can't really watch their stuff any more, not enough entertainment for the lack of good info.

. You can clearly pick out BITOG readers. Also see why we have to educate many that aren’t….I noticed that too, at time 7:15 he checks out the bypass valve. You can see it's seated up all the way on the end cap, but after he pushes it in with his finger is looks like it didn't pop all the way back to the end cap.
