I do agree. If I was using synthetic and buying regular price (without hunting for rollbacks), why should I choose WM's M1 when I could buy RP from a local supplier at the same price? If Walmart has a smoking deal, I have no problem buying from there. I'd rather support the small business when I can, though. Walmart isn't one of my customers, so I certainly don't feel obligated to be one of theirs.

Heck, I can have a case of RP delivered to one of my businesses for no additional charge and I can pay at my convenience. Will WM or Canadian Tire do that for me?
 
For $10/qt (normal price in my area) there are other oils I'd rather have.

When it's on sale at Pep Boys, it's a good buy.

I am new to the forums myself. There is a plethora knowledge on these forums.

In response to your question. I have a friend who is the Manager at my local NAPA.

He uses RP for his race car. I have a SUV and use another product. Its vehicle specific and a personal preference. As others recommend an analysis may assist you as a long time goal.

Not sure why you'd have to pay 10$ a quart for RP,when you can search online and find it at least 3$ cheaper for the API version of RP,and there's not anything wrong with it either,regardless of the non-sense thats spread on these forums.

Obviously,the HPS version is gonna be 9$ a quart,some of you need better shopping skills thats for sure.

Here in the US I pay about $5.50 a qt(5 qt jug) for M1 0-20 at WM. That's an every day price. I was paying $5 a qt in 1978 for M1 5-20. WMs price by the qt is $6.50.

If Calumet wants me to try their RP they need to take out the purple dye & bring the price down more in line with other quality synthetics. I'm sure it's good but I can't bring myself to put purple in my engine. M1 & PP works great for less $.
 
If RP was really that big of a rip off, we wouldn't be starting wars over it.

City Star is a rip off, but we don't start wars over it. It's obvious that there's people that really like Royal Purple, and people who don't think that other people should like it.

That's all there is to it, folks.


Personally, I have three bottles that I bought on clearance, haven't used them yet, but I will get around to it eventually. I may end up buying extra qt or 2 to make the oil change capacity of my vehicle.

And I can certainly do better than the pricing I provided, tig1. I was just using WM's and Canadian Tire's regular price on the top end synthetics for comparison's sake. WM here doesn't tend to stock a lot of RP, but CT/Partsource has started. At that establishment, RP is competitively priced with the other high end synthetics.

That being said, as I've mentioned before, if I were to buy synthetic, M1 has the best everyday price; I'd just have to buy it at a place people don't normally look for oil. Its price there has only risen once (by about $2 for the big jug) in around 15 years. And my M1 source is a weird store, yes. For M1, buying by the big jug is the better deal. If I buy Mobil conventional there, it's significantly cheaper by the quart. Go figure.

By the quart, though, my regular price on RP is better than the regular M1 price. I have not gone out to specifically find what the best RP price is for a 5 quart jug, yet.

All I'm saying is that prices are all over the place. If I needed one quart bottles or M1 0w-40 or RP 0w-40 (M1 0w-40 is still only available in litres up here), RP has the better price, barring rollbacks. In the big jug, M1's price beats everything out there, bar none, excepting rollbacks.

It's just not an apples to apples comparison when one is looking at the prices of synthetics like M1 or PP (or even M1 EP, PU, or Edge with Titanium) that are routinely sold at places with huge rollbacks versus something like RP that is mostly available at parts stores.

If I were to switch to synthetics, M1 and RP would be among my top choices, simply because I can get both at a reasonable "regular" price, at locations that are convenient for me, without having to hunt for rollbacks. Rollbacks here on synthetic are usually a recipe for immediately empty shelves, anyhow.

Yep, find a major oil out there with any type of advertising strategy and see if they don't make flowery claims. RP shouldn't advertise some percentage of wear protection, yet Defy gets to reduce 98% of all future wear, whatever that means? And M1's competitors could have 8x less wear than M1?

I suppose it's acceptable if the claims are meaningless (future wear) or based upon a bad batch.

When is the last time you priced M1 syn oil at Wal-Mart in the qt bottle? Haven't seen $6.50 for over a year around here at the WM's.

For most people RP is more expensive than other synthetics. I will admit, depending on the special, RP can come close but it still is more expensive. Is it worth the extra cost? Well, according to that article that I linked, no.

$6.47 a qt. in these parts. I was in the WM in Bath, Me. last month and their prices were the same as here in the heartland.

My point about $10/qt was meant in reference to other off-the-shelf oils. I agree it can be had much cheaper online, but at that point if I'm going through the trouble of ordering online there are still others I'd rather own.

LOTS of people buy those synthetics in qt bottles. It may be because their sump takes less than 5 qts and they don't want to deal with the left over from a 5qt jug or many sumps take more than 5qts which requires a few qt bottles as well. Lots of people won't shop at Wal-Mart as well. The main point made was when comapring qt bottle costs RP is no more expensive than the others.


But that's not a relevant price comparison. Like I said, a smart shopper will buy quarts of synthetic oil when they're on sale. When they're on sale, it doesn't matter if he buys either quarts or jugs. The per quart cost will be the same, usually in the $5-6 range per quart. RP never seems to be on sale at auto parts stores.
