Royal Purple 5w40

Well folks.. It appears that I wrote my review a bit too soon.
I would like to take back a few of the negative things I said in the above post/pictures....


When I put royal purple in.. it was purple.. a few miles later it turned clear. Clearer than any other oil I have ever used (and believe me - i've had my share)

well..it remained clear.... but not even 1,000 miles later... it is almost black. i estimate in another 1,000 it will be pitch black.

I can only assume this is due to the detergents. I have ran Motorcraft semi syn. for thousands and thousands of miles and the oil came out real light and brown.

I am glad i used the over priced K&N filter for this application.

I would like to recant the statement that I would never use royal purple again. I very well might. No other oil, even when first switching to synthetic (in other cars) has done this.

Look at the above pictures - there is no varnish inside the valve cover. the dipstick is pure silver. I never knew the engine had much to clean off inside of it.

at 117xxx miles - I feel that the royal purple was a very well deserved treat for my engine.

Decided to take my dad's car for a long drive. He has put roughly 300 miles since and the car drove smooth. Now that the weather has cooled considerably and not using the AC, idle is super smooth and no vibrations. At idle, no lifter tick and I purposely went thru a Dunkin Donuts drive thru to get coffee and it was hard to even tell that the engine was on. Usually with my car(2009 Acura TL) there is a audible tick/faint knock when at a drive-thru or in my garage. Not so with his MB E350. Really immpressed with this oil.

Just for [censored] and giggles, I am going to change this oil out in a year to Red Line 5w40 and see if my impressions are the same. I know, I know that seat of the pants impressions/reactions mean jack squat but I put a lot of weight on how the car drives tells me how the oil is doing. We will see in a year.

I ran the RP 0w40 in my car for 2,500k miles and it was as black as night. The inside of my engine is clean and grey as can be. The oil was so black I changed it out. I don't know where it found stuff to clean but dang. I know that I pulled it way way way too early but I love to change my oil... it's an addiction I constantly fight lol, and I love to baby my baby. The Edge is doing well too that I put in btw.

Almost forgot, one point of note however. With the RP I seemed to gain oil somehow. At first fill, it was just below the dipstick. After the next day and two long drives, it was a hair over full, so I sucked a bit out and it was now a hair under again. A week later after some serious spirited driving, I checked it after 15 minutes of cool down and it was now quite a bit over full. I sucked that out again to get it back.

I'm not sure what was going on (aeration?).

Oil doesn't increase on it's own. Does it smell like gas? Sounds like fuel getting into it. Coolant leaking in could do it too but it would make the oil milky.

RP does contain LOTS of detrergents. Nearly 2,000ppm of Ca detergent, and another 1,000ppm or so of MG detergent. I suspect it does a lot of cleaning that other oils don't, and that is why it turns black so fast.....

The hot oil is expanding and takes up more space than the cool room temperature oil you poured into the car.
