My friend at work just bought a nice, used 2000 C5 Corvette with an LS1. It's due for an oil change and he was asking me about Mobil 1, Royal Purple and Redline. I don't know enough about the subject to answer him properly, so I posted it here. The car comes from the factory with Mobil 1, correct? He also asked me about Amzoil but I've only ever used their gear oil. Anyone have any ideas? I think he should just stick with the Mobil 1.

Stick with Mobil 1...
All are great choices. Redline would be more ideal for track use IMO. If you knew how many of the OEM's tested their engines with Mobil 1 in them, you would have no hesitation on using it. Porsche is extremely finicky when it comes to oil selection.
Mobil 1. Amsoil and Redline are good too, but Mobil 1 is cheaper and easier to find.
Does your friend know what oil was used in it and how many miles are on the Vette. If it spent all it's life on Mobil 1 I would stick with it.
My Vette get Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 and a NAPA filter.

Use oil that meet OEM spec (GM4718M) for that specific model.
Mobil 1 0w30 and 5w30 meet or exceed spec:
Pennzoil Platinum also meets GM 4718M
If he can find it on sale, I'd go with the PP.
Having run Mobil 1 in my 04 vette since birth, I'm a bit concerned about the apparent recent reformulation by Exxon-Mobil. Mobil 1 is not what it used to be.

PP sure was let off the hook from their GV highly praised EOP reduction to GIII base stock.

I have ~10k used oil analysis for both the EOP and GrIII formualtions of PP, and both were nearly identical.
I see no hook to be let off of.

There has been no significant difference in Mobil 1 used oil analysis either, but its now the #@$%! child of the internet. And who really knows which M1s are GIII anyways.
