Any information about this? I have always liked Royal Purple oils. Used RP 5W-20 API SM.

Now I am debating topping up the oil from bottom of crosshairs on dipstick, to the full mark.

How good is this oil? Information? Thoughts? Who else likes RP? *Debating changing soon. Might use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40... 2000 Volvo 5-cyl

Never used it myself, but public opinion is that its a shear prone oil with an avg add pack. But base oils dont show up on VOA/UOA

Overpriced, Overhyped, Good if you like it and got the OCI down to a science,

Wait what am I saying? I use AMSOIL, Yeahh, Use what ya like! Its API SN So pick your poison!

I have the RP SN 5w20 in my car as I type. I have used RP in that car for last 180k miles. FANTASTIC OILs. I don't think the SN would be the exception here. GRUMPYJARVIS, why the hate on something you have never used? Talking out your rear?

IMHO, Mobil 1 0w40 is your best choice for that vehicle.

Mobil 1? Really k1ll,
That's all you suggest, EVER. M1 has turned out some fairly average used oil analysis. used oil analysis may be next to worthless as you claim. Unless you HAVE anything better, nothing else to go on.
For the record, M1 show the WORST used oil analysis in my car. It is a [censored] oil.. complete trash

Best used oil analysis I ever got was a 10K run or the old SL blend of RP 5W20. I disagree that it's shear prone generally but like other oils, it will shear. Not sure I like their new API certified oils all that much. Like all syns, it's overpriced for me and I agree that it's overpriced generally based on it's characteristics. Overhyped? Certainly, but that's just as true of Amsoil and the other boutiques out there. You could do better for the money and a lot worse.

So because Mobil 1 once turned a bad used oil analysis in your car it is a terrible oil? This line of thinking is absolutely ridiculous. Im assuming you ran Mobil 1 SM/GF-4 and you got slightly higher Fe levels. Mobil 1 is a very good oil as is RP , Amsoil , Redline and other brand name oil. If you are going to post here , please dont post absolutely ridiculous posts.

Why should royal purple API oil be worth the extra cost over any other certified 5w20 ? Ive never seen proof its synthetic. At least you know amsoil signature is a higher group oil - or DO you ? Hmmmm ... ...

That is a moronic post.

RP is good, if you want to shell out for an oil that isn't a whole lot better (if any) than the top tier oils that are on sale constantly go for it.

The hypocrisy is just killing me because Royal Purpke is all that DrDusty86 suggests. Lol

To the OP, most people here will tell you that Royal Purple is overpriced.

Email RP and ask them. They'll tell you what the base oil is.

For RP 5w20, the base is Grp IV.

Nothing wrong with it. I used it once in the Mini and very well may go back to it once the warranty is expired. Lots of the Mini speed shops sell it.

As far as price, I regularly see it on sale for less than Mobil 1, so on sale, cost is a non issue.

It wasnt a hateful bash post. If he wants to use it, use it.
I was referring to the hate this thread possibly could get.

every week its something
"Royal Purple is OVERPRICED!"
"AMSOIL IS OVER PRICED"
"LUCAS IS REALLY HERSHEYS SYRUP WITH A 50$ PRICE TAG!"

As long as its API Certified, and you know your vehicles toll on oil TBN, Go for it!

Nicely reasoned. And so true.

I have nothing against RP, just haven't seen the benefits in my applications. Each of us gets to CHOOSE.

There is no 'best' oil, and it doesn't need to be purple either.

I have run RP for decades and have always had good results with it. Haven't run the new API 5W30 SN formula as my vehicle calls for 5W20. I have run the 5W20 SN and so far have been pleased. Plan to do a used oil analysis in the near future. Just waiting for the vehicle to get some miles on 1st( only 9K and 1 year old ).

Also, just FYI, RP never offered a 5W20 SM formula. It went from SL to the current SN. They had/have a few SM formulas but 5W20 was never one.

Badtlc: Sorry, nothing against you ata all but I really, REALLY doubt that. Top tier M1 is 0w40 is mainly VISOM griii base "synthetique Technologie". I consider A Tech line email of phone call = used car sales veracity. I would need to see a Korean MSDS just as a start. I'm talking their APi oils - as their race stuff is porbably not as cost considered; Even LUCAS make some killer real high groupe synthetic race oils.

If they don't tell you, you'd be the first to be denied.

Thank you for your educated and well worded post on the topic, obviously you are the authority and all the certifications the oil holds and all the testing it has been through are completely useless drivel compared to your personal testimony
