I was planning on running RotellaT 5W40 in my car due to the good reputation and I like the higher viscosity of 15.5 cst @100C. I wanted to reduce oil consumption on long OCI's. I just saw the new T6 version that has replaced it and the viscosity has changed. Now it is at 14.2 cst @ 100C.

Seems like a significant drop, even Mobil1 TDT is at 14.9, and 0W40 is 14. I always viewed Rotella T as a beefier and heavier oil. Anybody have any experience with the new T6?

I'm not ready to try it until the Summer but the T6 is supposed to be more shear stable. Would that help at all in your application?

That would make sense...no benefit of having 15.5cst if it drops to 12 or 13 quickly. Thanks.

Here's an extensive thread on RT6S:

Note Johnny's comments on page 2 and following, which I consider to be pretty authoritative.

RTS is superb oil- at least in gasoline engines that can tolerate a 40-weight. Its interesting that it, more than the other HDEOs, has such a loyal following among certain gasoline vehicle drivers like the turbo Subaru crowd and the Jeep 4.0 crowd, and the flat-tappet muscle car crowd. I think its partially the price point, but it sure turns in some darn fine UOAs too. I just posted another great one from my Jeep 4.0. I can't really think of another oil quite like it, the Shell XHVI base stock its built on is great stuff.
