Rotella T Syn and Pennzoil Platinum

Hi All,

Are these two oils using the same base stock synthetic? I am sure the add packs would obviously be different but curious about the base stocks comparison.

That's a good question. I would say "no" - that they haven't merged the technologies to that extent (yet). But I really don't know. Look forward to an educated answer.

Yes, I am anxious to see if anyone knows the answer as I do know that Rotella T has a great base oil and it would not surprise me to know they share the same stock but maybe PP has an even better stock if that is even possible.

No I do not think so. First RTS tends to be fairly shear stable and has low to no consumption issues. PP is just the oposite. I do not think they have anything in common but I am just basis that on my use of both products and their performance in use not inside info. I can tell you the obvious though that their additive package is completely different.

I have used both. I see no difference in my applications as far as shear stability and/or consumption. Both were very stable, neither were consumed. I do NOT agree with your statement that they are opposites in this regard.

I've read where you stated that you think too many people praise PP as the "golden-haired child" of the day. You may be correct on that, but, to make a statement that Rotella and PP are opposites in regards to shear stability and consumption is incorrect.

Well, it's a bit hard to make blanket comparisons. RTS is limited (primarily) to a 5w-40 HDEO (yes, synth blends are available with very limited distribution)..while PP's offerings are diverse. Very few spec RTS and most usage is "adapted" outside of the intended target market. PP is broadly spec'd and has a vast potential market.

Geez...my dipstick is lying to me again...PP in 4 vehicles..no consumption after 2 initial OCI's.

PP is a great oil for what I use it for: an economically priced (BOGO) GRPIII daily driver oil. When my stash is gone I'll look for the next decent bargain and stock up again. Not rocket science...just good economic sense. I get a decent synthetic oil change with a great oil & great filter for $21.

I think that it would be safer to say that RTS is an extremely robust oil that is very hard to beat up when compared to PCMO's. Draw your Ven diagrams and RTS has a pretty BIG FOOTPRINT


Take a ven diagram and assign x amount of area to durability, shear stability, etc..etc ..and there will be much common ground that is tread on in common usage.

In the case of RTS vs. PP, I'd think that the PP circle would be smaller and sit well to the interior of RTS's.

Well, I am just starting to think that Rotell T may be a better option for my cars then over the PP 5w30 as my cars can take 5w30 through 15w40. That is , if the Rotella T is a better/more robust oil than the PP.

Excellent illustration, and I agree with the guestimate of the relative size/position of PP and Rotella.

Coffee, it's main competition (RTS) is Delvac 1. They are both VERY robust oils.

I love RTS, but I'm becoming increasingly annoyed at the price increases. Wally World just jacked the price to $18.XX/gallon, and the auto chains almost never put this stuff on sale.

At $12.64/gal, RTS was bargain and a half. Now, I think I'll just wait for the PP BOGO.

Thanks for the input! I am leaning towards Mobil 1 HM 10w30 now though as it seems ideal for my vehicles and easy to get at WalMart as well.
