Although not many folks in the south paid attention to this, Rotella 0w40 CJ-4 also had a SN rating. Shell Rotella took this away and the Rotella 0w40 is now CK-4 (and CJ-4) but no longer SN. The API will no longer give out a S rating to any oil with over 800 ppm phosphorus like it used to with some of HDEOs. The first two products are the old jugs. The last two are the new product. Enjoy.

Who cares? If you know the content and like it, run it. I have not changed a thing since Rotella T6 5W40 and 15W40 lost the rating. The only issue ever would be if you burn a lot of oil , otherwise nothing is different. My Jeep and Chevy truck have lived on these oils for over 10 years and I'm not stopping because the stupid ratings have changed.

I've never even seen this before. Only recently saw the T6 15w40 at Menards. Must be a northern flavor.
In he US Advance Auto was carrying it but it recently got blown out for $5.95/gal since about the only people who buy it are old Volvo guys, some stores I went to still had the old style SOPUS jugs they stopped using around late 2015-2016 because nobody bought it.

Perhaps it's just me, but I didn't find this 0W-40 on Shell's website yesterday. Is it there?
This is/was great arctic oil for Alaska.

I picked up 6 gallons at Advanced for 12.35 a gallon. I won't run it in my ram because it's not CK and it's new and under warranty but I'll run it in all my other stuff!

This is interesting and, slightly off topic but related. I recently cleaned out all local Autozones of their Chevron Delo 5w40 synthetic. It seems heavily marketed to diesel but carried the CJ/SM for the "LE" (discontinued) or CK4/SN ratings for the "XSP." In the fine print or info sheet it states it's also for gasoline and turbo engines. Autozone has clearanced them at only $7.50 per gallon.

But looking at a VOA I found online, the phos ppm seemed to be around or slightly above 800 ppm. I wonder if Chevron is doing away with the SN ratings entirely on these? I wonder if these truly are okay for gas engines?

Then again, looking at the Mobile 1 0W40 VOA I found online, the phos is 1020 if I'm reading that right. Looking at Pennzoil Platinum 5w40 it's also north of 800 on a VOA found here.

So is it the phos, or something else?

With some difficulty I found a PDS that included TBN: 8.6. I was thinking about its’ usefulness for Canadians or northern tier USA states that make an annual trek to Mexico every winter; considering much Mexican diesel is still ~300 ppm.

Like this old Volvo red block guy. 🙂

So what if they can‘t get SN? Why not just SJ?

Am concerned without an S rating it won’t be suitable for neutralizing gasoline combustion byproducts.
