Rolling Coal...a perpetual annoyance

I'm sure many of you are familiar with "rolling coal"-where basically diesel pickups are modified so that either on-demand or during acceleration they belch big thick clouds of black smoke.

I had one today that was a new one on me. It was a nice day, and I was out tooling around on some country roads at 45-55 topless in the MG-in other words perfect timing and conditions for it.

I went through a small town, and as we're leaving two lanes merge into one. I'm in the left lane(which is the one that "continues" rather than merging, if that makes sense), and ahead of me in the right lane is a lifted "Brodozer"

I slowed down and motioned for the driver to get over, which they did without hesitation. It was lifted enough that my car could have nearly fit under it, and frankly I'd rather them in front of me than behind.

In any case, the truck gets over, and the next second I'm enveloped in a cloud of soot that's coming from the truck's tailpipe. I can't see, I'm coughing, and when things finally clear there's gray/black soot EVERYWHERE on me and the car.

No idea what I did to provoke that, but it's the first time I've had someone direct this stupid practice at me personally. Aside from being a nuisance, it's frankly dangerous, or at least I felt it in that situation.

Unfortunately, unless the police catch them(yes, my state does have a law against it) I'm guessing there's nothing that can be done.
Compensation of some strange sort maybe.

I recall some little man in his POS Super Duty doing this to me while I was on my motorcycle. After I passed him, his POS didn't handle the curves nearly as well as my sportbike. It ended poorly for him and his POS.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes...
Karma can be a good thing in some cases.

These types are unfortunately pretty common in my locale. Most of them tend to be fairly young with a well heeled dad/mom, and live in the basement of the very large and well appointed family domicile.

The EPA is cracking down on the companies making the tuners. But not people that have installed them. I have a PSD and its all stock. I need to breathe clean air as do my kids and grandkids.
It seems like they want to though, both JH Diesel as well as Brent from PFI made YouTube videos about how the EPA came in and demanded a list of names/addresses they sold parts too.

The EPA is one of the federal agencies in the alphabet soup mix that I would hate to see show up at my door. Actually most all of them.

If that happened down here some folks would speed up to truck and pump some rounds into the driver’s door. No joke.

Poor old lady got blasted in Denver and crashed into the idiot. she was rattled but otherwise OK. Could care less about the knuckle dragger.

Not a chance I'd try to do anything myself in a situation like this. I'd have taken a license if I could have.

Road rage and "trying to take care of it yourself" is dangerous in the best of situations, but especially when you're in a 2000lb tin can and getting blasted by a lifted 3/4 ton pickup(which is, what, 6000lbs or so?)

When you argue with one of these mouth-breathers, you end up getting down to their pathetic intelligence level and they beat you with experience.

Let the law deal with these miscreants.

I've seen video where this was targeted at a police officer helping someone with a flat tire. But yeah - this seems to be pretty popular in places where people are allowed to carry firearms. I'm surprised nobody has been killed in retaliation yet.

I saw a whole lot of this in my area about 10-12 years ago. They were known for targeting motorcyclists, bicyclists and anyone in a small car. Lots of overtime at the battery plant and Mom's basement equaled big bucks diesel mafia. Very often in packs. It had seemed to completely disappear for some years, but I've recently seen it again, several times. Next gen, I guess.

The biggest rage for the past couple of years around here, seems to be backfire "tunes". Not trucks, but smaller poorly done 50th gen Fast and Furious cars. Loud to very loud bangs or pops when backing off the throttle. Intentionally done at every home on a road. Constantly on and off the throttle wherever they go. Many calls to police about homes being fired on. I suppose at the cheesy end, it could be done by disabling secondary air injection? At the expense of cat converters. No interest at all from law enforcement. Zero road enforcement for any violations for several years.
