National Geographic reports this is the longest road trip in the world. In many ways, sounds like fun.

On a funny note, I have full confidence my 2002 F350 with the 2valve V10 and 4.33 rear, and 200k miles could do this trip today, only needing a few en route oil changes and front end lubrication to the zerk fittings, maybe a retorque of the spark plugs every 3,000 miles.( I haven't retourqued or replaced the plugs since 2018 and 40k miles ago).

Author Tim Cahill wrote the book "Road Fever" about he and a professional driver making this trip. I read it long ago. Not exactly a piece of great literature, but interesting anyway. They were trying to set a record so it sounded pretty boring - are we there yet?

Thanks for sharing the book. Shame their trip was about time, and not about the adventure.

Still worth a read if your interested in this topic. Salient is they took something like a fairly stock GM pickup or the like - I can't remember exactly.

I also remember seeing some article or other about someone doing it in I think a Tiguan - maybe for publicity when VW first launched them.

You still have to find your way around the Darien gap - 60 miles between Panama and Columbia. There is no road.

I know someone that did it on a motorcycle. He was from Argentina originally and he said that helped get him out of a few sticky situations in the Central and South American portions. He sold the bike at the end and flew home.

Wow, can't fathom that trip on a motorcycle, for parts availability alone. I I could think of a half dozen other reasons how much more challenging that road trip would be in a bike.

Yeah, I can’t remember what bikes they took. He met a woman at a wedding and was telling her about his planned trip, she was so interested she learned to ride a motorcycle and went with him!

Somebody on this forum did this trip I think or a very similar trip and barely got back on the last flight before the COVID lockdowns.

My kind of woman.

I think I'll mention to the wife that we should do this. I think she'll be as enthusiastic as me. She already rides very well. But our dirtbikes wouldn't be suitable. So that would mean adding two more ADV-type bikes to the stable.
