I've heard it said that if you can't tell the story of the sport without bringing up a person's name he should be in the HOF.
His story and what he did are and will always be a part of baseball.

I've also heard it said that a lifetime isn't over until no one speaks his name.
Seems harsh.

I guess we will see what MLB thinks about it eventually.

Snort cocaine and get in the Hall of Fame.
Assault women and get in the HOF.
Pump your body with steroids and you still are eligible for the HOF.
Bet on your own team's baseball games and you're out forever.
While I agree with you that the "lessons" of society are not evenly applied (to put it mildly) and that the publicity value of HoF induction apparently outweighs snorting, assaulting and pumping is infuriating, one has to remember that gambling threatened the livelihood of everyone in the sport.

And a response like, "No it doesn't, people gamble today", is childish.

Ohh, such a rule is draconian! It took the explosive talent of Babe Ruth to resuscitate the sport after the previous gambling scandal.

Who had the most hits in baseball? Pete Rose
Who had the most 2-hit games? Pete Rose
Who had the most 3-hit games? Pete Rose
Who had the most 4-hit games? Pete Rose
Who had the most 5-hit games? Pete Rose
Who had the most 6-hit games? Hmmm, let me think .....it was Pete Rose with 20!

I love him but Charlie Hustle jeopardized everyone in baseball's capacity to make a living.

Being a Cincinnati kid I was able to see and meet Pete a few times over the years and have a few of his autographs on various things.... When he played here, he lived pretty close to where I lived growing up. As teens one night after smuggling a few beers from the garage my then girlfriend/now wife and I had a little too much to drink and decided we were entitled to see what Pete's house looked like up close, so quietly giggling like morons we went strolling up the long driveway around 2:00 a.m. for a look-see. Wasnt until a few days later we found out we went to the wrong house..... three houses on the whole street and idiots we were, we had went up the wrong driveway, his house was the next one up the hill from the one we were sneaking around. Just as well, we didnt belong there in the first place, but it was a fun memory.

He was far from being a perfect person, but obviously an incredible baseball player. I was sitting behind the Red's dugout and saw him hit an in the park home run at Riverfront stadium while I was in grade school in the 70's. Checkered past or not, put him in the HOF, he belongs there.

He was a good player despite what he chose to do. My dad’s favorite team was the Reds so he seen him play plenty of times. I hate it when we lose baseball stars. It sucks he died right before the playoffs which are set to begin tonight.

I said this to my buddy. I think society holds that generation to a higher standard. imho Pete Rose should be in the HoF. Today, seems folks can commit felonies and they are barred from nothing really. RIP Charlie Hustle.
