He was one of the original founding members and guitarist in The Atlanta Rhythm Section. I grew up in Georgia, listening to ARS and I still listen to them today. They were a great band and big part of Georgia Music and Southern Rock. I wore out their live album "Are You Ready" when I was in high school. Barry had MS for long time. I am sorry he is gone. RIP and no more sickness now.

I loved that group as a kid in the 70s. I got my parents to by me "Imaginary Lover" and "So in to you" on 45s. They either came from Winn's or Eckerd's. I swear everyone sold records in the 1970s. Even grocery stores sold records.

RIP.

If I had to pick a favorite ARS song, it would be this

ARS had too many great songs to pick just one. Too many talented musicians and good bands are long gone now. RIP. I am very glad I own the records and got to see a few great bands and great players live back in the day.

Sad. We are losing them all. I saw Barry play so many times in the 70s and 80s with ARS. Think Jr Cobb and Ronnie Hammond both are gone now too. One of the finest of what was known as "southern rockers." RIP.

I always wondered how they ended up covering "Spooky":

Atlanta Rhythm Section, sometimes abbreviated ARS, is an American southern rock band. The band unofficially formed in 1970 as former members of the Candymen and the Classics IV became the session band for the newly opened Studio One, Doraville in Doraville, Georgia.

Guess I will break out the ARS collection this week. They have some amazing songs they did over so many years.

I love Doraville , Alien, and Back up Against the Wall along with pretty much all of it. Some years back I was seeking the rare Are You Ready ARS LIVE Cd and could find none. A friend just happened to attend a music trade show in NY and he grabbed the one he spotted and shipped it to me. :)

A better article here about Barry and the early beginnings of ARS.

Wow. Sad. I been a fan of the since the Back Against the Wall days. We saw them thru the "hits" years and then lucky to see them when reformed several times in the 1990s with most origial members B Bailey and Ronnie Hammond -minus Jr Cobb who was off playing with Johnnie Cash. Wife got to meet and talk to Hammond at a casino as we stumbled right into them preparing for a sound check. Bailey could really play and with him and Hammond's vocals they were just as good in the 90s as I recalled in 70s. I have all their albums in Cd form except #1 that I never owned. I even own the much sought after Cd version of "Are You Ready!" took me many years to obtain that from a friend who managed bands found it at a Trade show. Sent it to me free in the mail. Two fo their songs I never could hear enough. Dorraville and Alien. Ronnie Hammond gave me chills with that voice on Alien. Losing them all each year. I can not even stand to watch or listen to anything the "new ARS" is doing these days. To me they are a partly talented cover band. I would be ashamed to tarnish all those great songs / memories from the originals who made them famous and true Southen Rockers. There were no two better with those tunes than JR Cobb and Barry Bailey playing off each other..

I finally got Winamp to work on my laptop today. The first album I am listening to on it is my Best of ARS. Doraville...ARS was a great band and they wrote some great songs.

You familiar with album? Red Tape? They really came alive on that one with a whole lot of hard & soft tunes on it. View attachment 136307
I surely do remember Red Tape. It was a good record. I had a T-Shirt back then with the album cover on it. I must have been in the 6th grade then, living in Macon, Georgia. Even in 6th grade I thought that album cover was so cool. My favorite ARS record though besides Are You Ready is A Rock and Roll Alternative. I just like the vibe and feel on that one. My Winamp library has a lot of greatest hits albums from a lot of bands. I need to go back through my master list and put the individual albums all back in there too.

I like that one too. R&R A + the follow up Champagne Jam really put them in the public eye when those got so much radio play. I liked all the stuff they recorded with the original members. If you can find it , try out one of their last ones from the studio - Truth In a Structured Form. There is a group that tours called ARS with I think one of the first studio players who recorded with them but I have seen YouTube of them and it actually stopped me from going to see them some years back. It is such a let down compared the original band.
