Went to AZ, and they now carry Pennzoil Platinum 5w30/10w-30 GF-4 (No Euro ACEA A3 5w30 yet) and Q 5w30/10w-30 Fully Synthetic oil. They also have GC.

The prices have really gone up across the board:

Pennzoil Platinum - $4.99qt
Q- Quaker State - $4.99qt
German Castrol - $5.19qt
M1 GF-4 - $4.99qt
Mobil 1 Extended Performance - $5.99qt

I'm also really tempted to use a Grp III like the Platinum. Might have a more expensive/better additive package then M1 GF-4 due to the lower cost of the base oil. ?? Any VOA's in the works?

For the Boutique oils

Redline - $8.95qt (add shipping)
Amsoil S2k Pref.Cost - $6.70qt (add shipping)
Amsoil ASL/ATM - $4.85qt * *
Amsoil XLF - $3.85qt

"Lube Report from Lubes'n'Greases" has been steadily running articles about the increasing prices of the chemicals to make synthetic base oil, the shortages and prices of chemicals to make the additives, as well as the well known price jump in crude oil.

Also, the new GF-4 and SM specs require higher priced ingredients in the oil.

Can you say stockpile!! This is exactly why some of us have built strategic reserves. Some board members will never have to buy oil again during their lifetime. Some have enough oil to pass on to their grandchildern.

I think I am starting to get it. I have a $5,000 engine to protect and I should focus on $0.20 a quart for oil. Maybe I can save $0.03 on an oil filter too.

Unfortunately that $5,000 engine does not appreciate in value. Who are we really doing a service to by using higher end motor oils? The car dealer at trade time?

How about a "boutique" compromise? Schaeffer's Supreme 7000 synthetic blend, $2.92 a quart delivered.

I'm gonna put my kevlar flame suit on here......OK...I'm ready:)
Many who are sensitive to a few dimes and nickels have a valid point I feel.....they are trying to maximize the "value=results" with their oil/filter purchases to maximize the return....with that said....a person who truly wants to educate themselves (like the folks spending time here on BITOG) to exercise informed buying of oil products can rest easy knowing a daily driver/grocery getter can acheive significant return on value by utilizing a good conventional oil like Castrol GTX or Havoline with a $2.00 bottle of Valvoline Syntec Oil Treatment.....I would submit on a daily driver under "normal" conditions on a 5K OCI...one would be hard pressed to acheive better results/value with a Super Tech Oil Filter @$2 bucks....6 quarts of Havoline 10w30 @1.50 each=$9 bucks and 1 bottle of Valvoline Syntec Oil Treatment @ $2 bucks....total cost of oil change engine nirvana= $13 bucks and change for Uncle Sam....now I run through Amsoil like water through my GTO...but my daily driver is on the above program following a AutoRX cleaning....I have plenty of money...that is not the point...point is why waste it? Keep a good air filter and your good to go many many miles for pennies......I would also suggest taking a look at the results in Patmans excellent string of cars over 150,000 miles...look at all the "regular old conventional" guys with Fram/Super Tech filters and the results they are getting......I am confident the longevity/MPG/Performance goals can be met with the above mentioned $13 oil change @5K OCI's.....
I'll put my flame hood on now.....

I love my vehicles and will spend the extra $$$.
Mobil 1 10w30 Amsoil filter in my GP after the free Valvoline Synpower is changed.
Mobil 1 5w30 Nov to Apr and 10w30 Apr to Nov Amsoil filter in my new Corolla after it hits 5000 miles.
Amsoil 10w40 AC filter in my vette.

I've never used syn in any car before but I'm tempted to when I buy a new car. However, running say 10k intervals and paying $6 for 1 qt makeup isn't exciting to me though.

Price is not a concern to me at all. I never understood the logic of skimping out on oil, when you just spent $25k on a new car.

The point I was making is that all prices have gone up quite a bit and that we are seeing more high end synthetics at the retail store level.

The main reason I skimp on oil now is that we have seen too many reports of people using el cheapo oil and filters, changed often, and have 200K worth of trouble free miles, and a clean healthy running engine. If I can achieve the same end result with .59/quart oil compared to 5/quart oil.............no brainer to me! Granted, If I had a super duper high performance car still, I would use a better quality oil, especially for turbo motors but then again, there have been many a report here of turbo motors living long lives on dino.

Good points on the dino regimen...

If we are to argue that folks are actually "skimping" on oil at the peril of their engines we are accepting the premise that synthetic oils protect better.

And that's a false premise. According to dozens upon dozens of used oil analysis posted here and elsewhere, it can be definitively and accurately stated that synthetics protect only as well as dinos, but no better.

With current dinos, the line is totally blurred between dino/synthetic these days anyway.

Drew I agree. That is why my thinking has changed for the Grp III's. I don't want to go past 10k mile drains. So for me, I might as well use a Grp III synthetic. They are very capable.

I propose in the average Joe scenario...a good dino/filter....3-5K OCI's is doing just as good as if he/her was running $9 per quart Synthetics with $12 dollar filters...the wear/performance delta's would be so insignificant they would not be considered.

Number 1 Good syns like amsoil, mobil 1 are more like $5 per quart. Good blends like schaeffer's more like $3 per quart. Average Joe if educated I believe would rather be playing golf, drinking, getting naked or any number of other things for the same money changing his oil half again as much.

Premium oil users far and away do so because of the fact that they want to give their machines the best chance to perform at its optimum with the least chance of any oil related problems... It has been proven that the premium oils do just that.

How does one explain this.

Mobil 1 75W-140 gear oil, $15-16 at AZ, Kragen, etc.

Redline 75W-140 gear oil, $8-9 +shipping, $12-13 at local speed shops.

Sorry I cant remember prices to the penny, but you get the idea.
