Just wondering if anyone else is noticing how slow the malls are. I work at a Nordstrom Rack, which is the discount version of full line Nordstrom.

I work in the pick and fulfillment back of store department. Orders have been coming is, but it's very lackluster. I'm questioning if and when it'll get busy.

I hear frequently through the walkie system that it's been hard to get customers to pitch in for the big sister Xmas charity.

New credit accounts have been a struggle to open as well.

Most people I know don’t even go to malls anymore or shop in person. They all do online shopping. I personally will always prefer to go to the store for something if possible. To me it’s not surprising that the malls are dead. When I went in the bigger mall that we have in my town it was a ghost town at peak time. Walmart has not been to busy either. I still wish they would open 24 hours again though as I like to do late night shopping when it is for sure a ghost town.

It's not just the malls. Nordstrom Rack locations are mostly confined to shopping plazas. Whereas regular Nordstrom at achor department stores at malls.

Payroll is also dwindling when it typically falls in January after Xmas and merchandise returns/exchange.

Please....retail sales data is fascinating no matter how you cut it.

I think the reduction of people-with-money strolling in malls/shopping centers is part of what hit eateries like Red Robbin, Houlihan's, Wendy's...whatever.

Malls are alive & well - they just added huge airplanes & departure gates to them …

In the Charlotte area we have SUPERMALL OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS (SouthPark) which is thriving. It's next to Phillips Place which also prints more money than the Fed. I hate going there. It's like 4000000 people are there every single day. I spent a lot of money there myself back in the old days. I'm frugal now that I'm getting older, so I don't go up that avenue much anymore.

Concord Mills seems to be pretty busy too.

Several others either dead or on a ventilator, and then we have the convenient to me Carolina Place. Which seemingly refuses to die. It's like TNA...... About a year and a half ago I would have said that within 3 years it would be a zombie. Saturday after Black Friday it was PACKED and still has a fair amount of cars in the parking lots whenever I ride by.

The Charlotte Outlet's are also booming. Like hard to get a parking spot on a Tuesday evening booming.

As my wife’s official shipping box stomper/recycler - I know one reason … 🙄

Nordstrom is an expensive store, and even the rack isn't exactly the cheapest :sneaky:

How are stores like TJ Maxx/Marshalls and Burlington in your area doing?

Do you have any regional department stores? How are they faring?

The closest Mall to me was torn down years ago, to be rebuilt as a village of stores. The THOUGHT was that people didn't want to be walking from store to store in climate controlled comfort. NO they really wanted to walk outside between stores in blazing 100° F temps in summer, and below 0° F in winter...

Needless to say it was a stupid idea.

THEN there was four years of rampant inflation, along with declining brick and mortar sales, and it has never been rebuilt. Now it's a vacant site.

I’m about 20 minutes from the King of Prussia mall outside Philly. We were there this past weekend to eat at one of their excellent restaurants. Walked around the mall a bit afterwards and it was pretty busy. This is a high end mall and it seemed like most people were just window shopping, like us….

The mall closest to me just chained the doors shut. They have a theater and some stores open around the perimeter but the inside section is closed. It felt pretty weird seeing that as we used to drive from pretty far away as kids to go there. It seemed huge at the time.
