Restaurant adding things to your bill.

The only time I was scammed by a restaurant was in San Francisco when the bill had itemized surcharges for health insurance, union dues, and 1 or 2 more stupid things. Definitely did not eat there again.

You should have deducted your expense of getting there, the taxes on your wages that paid the tab, the cost of your clothes to dine there and a general 10% OH expense

That looks like AI. She's got the generic AI face and no server would put 40% for an example either; 15, 18, 20%, or bust.
Definitely AI. There are other versions of that picture out there, with different wording.

Yeah, the AI images about 40% tipping and "then don't eat here" stuff are a bit out of control. No way an operator posts that in their facility as that will drive away most people thinking about going there.

I stopped going places when they started adding 3.5% to by bill for card payments (I don't carry cash), so I'm not sure how this "40% tip or don't eat here" came to social media.

I somewhat had this issue with a local builders supply place. Bought a window that was $2200. I had to give them a down payment of $1200 and didn’t have my checkbook so there was a 3% credit card fee. They charged me 3% on the $2200.

Wife went in last week after the window arrived to pay the remaining $1200 and bought $300 more in stuff. Paid with a check. They charged her for 3% of $2500.

I wonder how many people miss this. I certainly did at first.

Was in Orlando and hit the first mandatory 20% tip at a sit down burger place. For 2 people - I have seen this before for groups, never everyone.

If your tacking 20% on without question its no longer a tip or a fee, your menu prices are listed at 20% too low.

They said before they seated us "there will be a mandatory 20% service fee for the kitchen staff and workers" , blah blah blah Karl Marx workers unite speech.

You can tip your server as well if you want but not required.

OK fine. The service was very good. The food was meh but about what I was expecting. Server was nice so I did tip her 15%. Not her fault she has to work for morons.

My solution is not to go back ever.

Any restaurant that does this is 100% owned by some cheap idiot because service fees can be distributed by the owner as they wish versus tips that are technically owned by the server and cannot be claimed by anybody else. So instead of raising the prices and subsequently get people to turn away, they add the service charge and people now see it as part of the tip despite the server not actually getting any of the service charge.

Luckily I've only come across one restaurant that had a mandatory 20% tip, in River North in Chicago. The food was good but the service was garbage - an endemic caused by mandatory tipping by management because the server doesn't actually have to work for their tips if they won't want to.
