Replacing 15 inch wheels with 14

Wow, I didn't know 145/80R13's existed? Must've been very good in the snow. I had 155/80R13's on a 92 Sentra and then on a 95 Neon, and they were excellent in the snow.

They were only on a few very inexpensive cars, and only the lowest trim line, may have only been the Tercel and Civic. The tires were so hard to find, a lot of people just changed to 155's. Back in the 70's and 80's they were a little more common.

Very true. As I now know it's been done successfully by several people on this exact model car, I'm pretty confident it will work. As we're still at least six weeks (I hope) and probably more from any wintry weather, I won't be an instructor just yet. My back and other joints protest a trial and the switch back and switch back again. I was hoping to learn, and think I have, that it will work and I won't be scrambling for wheels and tires at the last minute. I was about 80% sure it would work, now I'm 99%, good enough for me. Of course before long 14 inch tires will be impossible to buy anyway. I should get two more winters out of my Nitto SN-2 snows, a real bargain on a very impressive performer, then I'll be shopping for replacements.

Just to update. The 14's fit just fine on the EX which had 15's as OEM. No issues at all except for about a 2% speedo error, which is fine with me.
