I do think however that toyota engineers do know what they are doing.
Same guys who designed the 22RE blow out seals and the sludge motors?
I would love to see how these filters perform. I don’t think you can tell by looking how well they actually filter. Are there any specifications or test data available?
My 22RE (87 4Runner) has over 300K Miles on it. Never had any isssues with the engine... In fact the engine was never opened until I decided to upgrade the timing chain rails guides to LC engineering metal guides.
Even those Sludge engines that you mention all ran for a very long time without any problems.
I am not trying to defend their problems, every car manufacturer has made mistakes in the past, and recalled certain models for whatever reason. However when you look at total overall quality Toyota/Lexus is certainly in the top 5 of all car manufacturers, so yes I would comfortably say that they know what they are doing.
Also had a 1987 Corolla FX16 GTS which went over 425K miles and was still running before I donated it to Salvation Army. And aside from 3 timing belts that engine was never opened for any major work either. Toyota Engines are designed to last a very long time.
I certainly don't have the means to test the 10004/20004 filters in terms of filter effecincy, but just by looking the filter mediums my guess is that it can probably match if not come very close to the EaO and other premium filters.
When you can buy the 10004/20004 filters for less than $10 shipped, to me it's a no brainer.
And there must be a reason that toyota puts these type of filter on pretty much all of it's engine assemblies at the factory.
