Replaced few parts, car still producing cam code

So posted before about my 04 Golf having starting problems in the mornings. We ran the VAGCOM on it and produced the codes seen in the first quotations. The 2nd quotation is the new VAGCOM reading after the repairs.

We did a ground wire repair that was in TSB by VW if those codes were present, replaced the ignition coil, and replaced the spark plug wires. While the repairs got rid of some codes, some still remained. Just wondering if I should now be replacing the cam sensor automatically?

Thanks for any help!!

According to your Vag-Com it looks like you need to replace the camshaft position sensor.

I'd start there.

You need to scope it. Lots of things will give you false bad cam sensor codes. Like an alternator with a bad diode. People telling you to replace something blindly just because a code is set should delete their accounts.

Oh come off it. He has a very specific fault code, displayed by VCDS. It's not like we're chasing P codes here, buddy.

I'd love to hear your explanation of how a bad diode in a 2.slow's alternator will throw a G40 sensor fault.

+2 that would be my next step also.

I agree. The code only tells you where to look, and it could be a wiring issue.

I think we can see who works on Volkswagen vehicles here and who puts a screw driver to the valve cover and makes an assessment.

For a VAG error code 17746:

17746/P1338/004920 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Open or Short to Plus

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active

Possible Causes:
Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) faulty
Wiring/Connectors from/to Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) faulty

Possible Solutions:
Check Camshaft Adjustment
Check Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)
Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)

I guess Volkswagen forgot to add that the alternator diode is on the same circuitry that trips this error code.

I'll be watching for a drop in member accounts after this error code is resolved.

Those that live by the by the code die by the code.

Ok smart guy, what would you do?

We're all waiting for your sage advice.

I personally think that KingCake(post above) is on the right track! That's my sage advice.

I will second KingCake and Trav's advice. Stop throwing Parts at it. Glorified Parts changers don't make good technicians

IIRC from his previous post on this he replaced a few parts already and did some wiring mod and checked the harness. The cam code seems to be persistent and not knowing if he has access to the diagnostic tools having some one hook up test equipment may well cost more than changing a $50 sensor (Rock Bosch OE) so changing it is not all that unreasonable either on an engine with over 120K on it.
I am no advocate of throwing parts at anything but sometimes if its not that expensive a part and for some reason is difficult to test properly (or you dont have the equipment) and it looks like duck and quacks like a duck well you get it.
You don't spend all day tearing into the wiring harness and checking it because a headlight is out, replace the bulb first.

I don't get the connection to a bad alternator diode, he doesn't complain of flickering lights and the battery going dead. Its easy enough to test with a DVM set on low AC volts.
