A guy on a VW forum said he put up to 18 quarts of oil in his R32 (VR6 naturally aspirated engine). He said he drove it for 5 min and had bad smoke issues (surprise ha ha). He wants to know what damage could have been done. Sounds like an interesting Q for the BITOG board. What do you think?

Also, the car apparently has an aftermarket supercharger installed.

probably no damage. certainly the oil would have foamed up and not have lubricated very well. are you sure this is a true story? how could someone be so stupid?

This is from a long time poster and doesn't appear to be a hoax in any way so far. I'll look at some of his past posts to verify but doesn't sound made up at all.

Ok, well explain to me how he managed to get it started then? The amount of extra oil would have made it very difficult for the engine to turn over, let alone run.

Looks legit. He has been a member there for 6 years and you can see posts from a couple years back re: the subject car. Didn't see any evidence of Troll posts or cooky hoaxes etc. in reviewing his previous posts.

He sounds like an oil change noob. I guess he doesn't bother to read the manual or check the dipstick. He wasn't thinking with his dipstick Jimmy.

the oil surely foamed up if that much is in there. It needs to all be replaced.

the cat can be damaged apparently... did he get a CEL?

Yeah, man. It takes a lot of oil to get it full all the way up the the oil fill cap.

I knew a kid that was in my high school shop class that opened his oil fill cap and "saw metal in there that should be under oil." He then kept dumping oil in until the rocker arms and valve springs were completly covered in oil. Needless to say it didnt work out too well for him. There are some people out there that are very dumb.

You might not believe me, but when I was selling retail auto parts a guy did the same thing. He came in with a few questions about changing his oil (after he did it.) Started with asking about exhaust smoke and hard starting after his oil change so I asked him about any additives that could have been in his old oil to keep it from smoking. Said he did not have any in the engine, but was concerned about how much oil his engine needed. After some confusion on "Refilling the oil" I asked him about the process he used to change his oil and all seemed ok until I asked him if he checked the oil level after he refilled the oil. He responded by saying he was concerned that he didn't fill the engine. So I asked him how much oil he put back in his engine and he said something like "I was told 5/6 quarts but it did not fill it up, so I got a box but it's still not full." That was 17 or 18 quarts and his car should have taken 5 or 6 at the most. Wow, he was thinking he needed more oil! Long story short, after draining it out and filling to the proper level he only had a small tick in the engine. I was surprised! He probably had a few gasket/seal leaks but I don't remember seeing him again. That was probably smart in his case as he didn't need to be messing around under his hood! I swear on a stack of bibles this is a true story. I could tell you many more about automotive ignorance...one that comes to mind is a guy trying to buy an "Engine key" for a truck with a "Locked engine." Ah the joys of retail.

Lawl. I didn't really think about it but yeah, I wonder how in the [censored] he did get it started. Could you even possibly get 18 quarts of oil in the crankcase of that engine? And think how much the oil change most of have cost.

Come on... we need the rest of this story. Why did he do that?

I asked, but I don't want to contribute to that being a bashing thread so I won't push it. It is bound to happen though I suppose (becoming a bashing thread I mean). Some of those threads go on for like 20 pages. Remember the Subaru kid who put gear oil in the engine and couldn't figure out what was wrong? That one was brutal. It doesn't help the OP at all though when they already feel bad and are looking for help.

A guy asked my dad what he should do since his temperature gauge was indicating hot. My dad told him to "be sure its full of water." So the guy took his garden hose and removed the oil fill cap and FILLED THE ENGINE FULL OF WATER! Needless to say, he had a few extra problems after that.

I once knew a girl that stopped at a gas station to buy some oil because her CEL was on.

She bought a few quarts and proceeded to pour the oil all over the top of her engine.

She then demanded her money back because the new oil wasn't black.

True story.

:D
