Removing tree Sap?

The pesky pine trees 'bleed' sap all over my recently painted 1996 Camary. The paint is fully cured and is base/clear Urthane.

I washed it with Dawn dish soap and very liitle of the sap came off. Obviously I don't want to hurt the clear coat.

Need advice folks.......

+1 on the mineral spirits. Or they sell bug/tar/sap remover which is mineral spirits.

You have not seen anything until your car is covered with dead love bugs in Florida.

Goo Gone is great. I had a tall bottle of it under my sink and can't seem to find it.

The only thing that stuff has had a problem removing is stickers when the glue fully cures into rock hard residue.

I think using an extremely soft cloth is key. Clear coat swirls are easy to make.

I understand that residue and use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner on it. Part # 051135-08984.

Soak a micro-fiber cloth and gently rub on the surface. Multiple applications may be needed. No Issues and works every time.

WARNING: Highly flammable liquid and vapor - Smells like Zippo Lighter Fluid.

First wash the car with high quality shampoo with an ounce or 2 of APC

Then use claybar to clean the surface. And if you want to give it all, use a paintcleaner after that.


Don't forget to protect the treated area with wax when your finished!

No odor mineral spirits do work well on fresh tree sap as you found out, but if you get some dried hard baked on tree sap bonded to your paint, the mineral sprits are a waste of time. That's were the Isopropyl alcohol works best.

Rubbing Alcohol and a cloth (Terry or Microfiber.) Works everytime regardless of how old the sap is and how thick it is.

I thought mineral spirits (aka paint thinner) was bad on paint? But rubbing alcohol is ok?

I have what I think is a patch of tree sap in the bed of my truck. It's on the bedliner, but it's not a couple drops, it's like someone took a cup of the stuff and poured it out. It's going to need some scrubbing.

Turns out, it was dried enough that a wire brush seems to be removing pretty good. A bit worried about what will happen when it rains, worried that sap dust will solidify, so will make sure to vacuum it up later.

Ohh-fa, some bad advice here. Mineral spirits i.e. paint remover on a fresh paint job!?

As suggested here (and other posts) simple isopropyl alcohol for tree sap. Walmart sells small bottles for under a buck.

Put some on a soft cloth or paper towel, take your time, let it work to soften and dissolve the sap.
