Remove Filter for Each OCI ?

No ... don't disturb the gasket. 8 oz of used oil isn't gonna make any difference.

I think if you leave the filter on for another OCI there is more oil left in the system than just what fits in the filter. Still OK though.

Some do, some don't. Personally, I do.

If you don't over-tighten the filter in the first OCI, the gasket is still okay for second OCI after removed it to drain the oil in the filter and filter housing.

Yes ... once it's been torqued down for a while, it will take a set and not want to compress like it was when new. Of the few times I've used an oil filter for 2 OCIs, I never remove the filter between oil changes.

True, depending on the engine's design there could be some oil in the main gallery that will also drain out the filter's mount when the filter is removed.

Well I'll tell you what I did one day - I experimented with the torque wrench on a PF47. My objective was to come up with the lightest torque setting that wouldn't allow me to remove the filter with my bare hand. That setting turned out to be 100 inch pounds. Even 80 inch pounds was still plenty tight, but if I put enough effort into it, it could break the filter loose at that setting. With this Wix, I'll probably start off at 80 inch pounds and see what it does.

Removing the filter is one of the worst parts of doing an oil change and if you don't plan on putting a new one on why go through the trouble?

I have run the filter for two OCI many times and didn't disturb the filter at all.

It makes it easier to check the fresh oil level as it gives it a little color.

The main reason I would leave a filter on for 2 OCI is to avoid another "dry start". I know, I know...it isn't completely dry, but it causes more wear. So if you remove the filter to drain it, then put it back on you are defeating the purpose.

Yeah if you go through the trouble of removing the oil filter to drain it, you might as well just replace it with a new one. The point of using an oil filter for 2 OCI's is to save a few bucks and to make the oil change quicker/easier.

Would you still add the required amount or just a little less and go from there?

What about you guys who are running two filters or more on one oil change? Do you take the oil from the used filter and drain it into the new filter to avoid dry starts, or into the crankcase after installing the new filter? Or do you recycle that used oil that was in the old filter and add new oil to the crankcase, or to the new filter? Oh, and how much new oil do you add? And if you add new oil, does that break the spirit of the idea that you are driving one oil load on two filters. Let's say that you were going to do two filters on one oil change, but you discover that the second filter is a Fram, orange cheap filter bought on clearance at Job Lot. Would you then need to add a third filter before the next change?

Greetings:

I leave the filter on for three runs, that equates to ~22,500 miles. When I change oil I put the plug back in and add 1.5 quarts of oil and idle the engine for about a minute. Then I drain that oil out of the motor. This flushes the lion's share of the old oil out of the motor. Then I just fill up the the full line and off I go for another 7,500 miles. I do regular oil analysis with particle count. I have sent the filters off to Oil Analysis Lab for filter analysis and flow testing. I've never had a plugged filter or restricted flow.

The particle count on the used oil with a 22k filter show oil with lower particle count than virgin oil.

What filter are you using for 22,500 miles?

I'm going to try my best to fight it and keep my oversized Fram Ultra on for a total of 15,000 miles. I will not be removing it to drain the oil. I have a few short run I want to perform to remove any excess Silicon so my precious PU will have to be dumped around 3k followed by some 2-3k conventional runs. I am having the PU sampled at 3k to re check for contamination but the Fram Ultra stays for 15k+

Just out of curiosity, how many miles would you say the regular size XG3387A is good for ?
