Fram says all the Ultras are rated for "up to 15K" regardless of filter size.

On Fram's website, it says about the Ultra.
"Ultimate dual-layer synthetic media provides up to 15,000 miles of engine protection. 1"

Note 1 says: "Follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner's manual."
 
If it doesn't handle it I'll know. I'll be doing used oil analysis along the way to monitor insolubles and probably going to cut it open.

The XG3387A has much less media surface area so logic should dictate it would have lower capacity and I might not feel as comforts running that 15k.

Flag note 2 says:
"FRAM Group testing of average filter efficiency and dirt holding capacity using FRAM XG3387A, XG8A, and XG4967 ... "

It was actually part of the test group. Like I said, nothing from Fram says any of the smaller Ultra filters are rated for less than 15K miles.
 
Which means I need to go longer than 15k on my practically double oversized XG 3980

Could be. I'm sure Fram wouldn't advertise "up to 15,000 miles use" unless even their smallest oil filter still delivered to that specification.

Why are these filters so little for anyway ? I've been looking at sizes of oil filters for various cars on O'Reilly's site because they list the dimensions and all the Asian cars like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, ... the filters are dinky.
 
They are that, and I was skeptical at first, having been brought up on Chevy small blocks and the like. Now, if those filters in use never even approached their dirt handling capacity (unless extreme negligence was the maintenance practice), perhaps we should look at it the other way. They were way too big for what's needed and are a waste of filter medium and metal.

Now, the fact that the Wix 51515 is $4.99 and the one for my G is in the $9 neighborhood, I guess my argument is shot to heck.

Yep, the 51358 is pretty small. But, it has "grown" on me, as it were. Something like that, assuming it's capable of doing the job and I'm confident it can, is a lot easier to handle when squirming around in tight places. I'm a very messy oil changer, and if a filter's smaller size helps me not to fumble the thing and cannonball it into the drain pan, that's a good thing. Part of that, though, may be the fact that Infiniti/Nissan seemed to pay attention and canted the filter in such a way you don't get an armful of oil when loosening the thing, nor do you have to contort yourself to get at the thing, or get near hot exhaust, and so forth.
 
What I'm amazed by is the engine somehow gets enough oil. Seems like such a small filter defies all logic.
 
My original worry had been about dirt holding capacity. My reasoning was the the engineering side of the flow was solved. But, with the absence of filters that have actually plugged up due to anything short of neglect, I guess we just don't have the need.
 
I just use one of these so I can drain the oil out of the filter without taking it off. Insert, remove to drain, then screw it back in.

... do-it-yourself filter drain plug. Not sure if I would feel comfortable doing that to an oil filter.

But the old oil man. I also put a couple quarts of water in after draining the oil. Crank and let it run for a few seconds then drain again. Gets all the oil out of the passages and what little water is left will evaporate off when the engine gets hot.

LOL Good idea, about as good as draining the oil and then briefly starting the engine with the drain plug removed to get more oil out.
