Seriously? There is just as much stupid and awful songs/artists way back then as there is now.

The early 70's was the high water mark if you like classic rock.

Quadrophenia
Dark Side of the Moon
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Houses of the Holy
Band on the Run

All around 1973, I think. I probably missed some.

I liked the late 70's / early 80's New Wave sound, also.

I also remember when FM radio sounded good. Now with all the pre emphasis and compression, it makes me want to drive nails in my ears. A good AM station sounds better. Actually, a bad AM station sounds better.

Plate modulation forever!

Spoken like a true Grumpi Grampi.

I get that maybe you're old and don't have the time/interest to actually find good music, or that maybe you just can't be bothered because "the kids just don't know what music is," but I can assure that there is still excellent music being made.

I'm no prude, but I remember growing up lots of the hit songs were about love and actual people, not portraying women and men as material things to own and use.

Ahhh yes, this argument.

See: Givin' the Dog a Bone, Whole Lotta Rosie, Fat-Bottomed Girls, any Motley Crue song, etc...

Songs have always been about sex. Basically everything in life is.

As someone stated, it is much easier for any/everyone to get their music out there these days. As a result, there is more chaff to sift through.

But the difference is, back then there was also great music...today there's NO music worth listening to...none!

Then it's kept well hidden...none of today's popular music is worth listening to...it's just noise...

it's not well hidden. you're only limiting yourself to popular music.

Provide some examples so we can calibrate to your wavelength.

Pop music and commercial rock/country on AM/FM stations from every era is fairly terrible although I will say that the 60s commercial stuff didn't suck as bad as say, the late 90s or current commercial stuff.

But if you dig a little deeper, there is great music in every era. And it is so much easier to find more obscure stuff today thanks to Pandora, Google Music etc. In the 90s when I came of age, we were forced to blow money on entire CDs to experiment. Today you can experiment for free. It's the best time for music.

+1

While I might agree that much of the current pop music might be less rhythm and melody and more sampling and self-consciousness, I think music in general is a lot more ubiquitous and accessible at the same time...that can be good or bad. Most of the stuff I think of as "great" never appeared on a Top 40 chart and is music I either ran into through searching or word of mouth.

I had a friend I met after high school who went on to produce and engineer a platinum album and I can't tell you how much he influenced me in musical areas that I never would have known if I'd only listened to what was popular. It's easier to broaden your perspective today but you have to actively be involved with it and not just passively listen to the radio and complain that Blue Swede doesn't top the charts anymore.

I think this argument also heavily depends on your musical tastes.. but here's an example of one song that I consider to be excellent, and was just released within the past few months.

Mind you, if you're not into Symphonic Metal, this may miss the mark for you.. but I personally think that at least technically, most people will find it's done well. Additionally, there's a very interesting duality to the vocals - The female vocals are almost operatic, and the male vocals are very gruff.

... and no, it's definitely nowhere near "Popular music" - It's deep into the progressive/symphonic metal spectrum, but give it a chance, and you might rethink things. FWIW - This band is among my favorites.

... or this. Same band, same album, very different song:

Arguing about whether music is good or not is like arguing that red is a prettier color than blue...

Semantics. You call it a 'statement' - I call it 1/2 of an argument.

Arguing about whether it's semantics or not is equally as stupid...
