I was thinking that Dahl also did a version of "Bomb Iran" (spoof of "Barbara Ann"), but the web tells me that I'm wrong.
Dahl could have me howling with laughter and then wanting to catch a train down to the Loop to find and strangle him within a five minute span. I guess I didn't really miss him that much when I finally swore him off.

Seriously, if you like it, more power to you...to me, it's an example of fluffy, forgettable pop.

It stuck as it was pertinent to this thread, and popped up in real life in the half awake half asleep zone between the news and getting up and making breakfast (while the family are on school holidays)...not a commentary on the worthiness of the song (like Corey Hart...stood out, not for any spectacular reason).

I could post my musical preferences but people always think that if they don't like it, then it must be bad. I'll leave the thread with this. You'll either like it or not...

All around 1973, I think. I probably missed some.

I liked the late 70's / early 80's New Wave sound, also.

I also remember when FM radio sounded good. Now with all the pre emphasis and compression, it makes me want to drive nails in my ears. A good AM station sounds better. Actually, a bad AM station sounds better.

Plate modulation forever!

Missed two spectacular ones:
Bat Out Of H ell
Piano Man

I'm no prude, but I remember growing up lots of the hit songs were about love and actual people, not portraying women and men as material things to own and use.

Ahhh yes, this argument.

See: Givin' the Dog a Bone, Whole Lotta Rosie, Fat-Bottomed Girls, any Motley Crue song, etc...

Songs have always been about sex. Basically everything in life is.

As someone stated, it is much easier for any/everyone to get their music out there these days. As a result, there is more chaff to sift through.

You can make a song about sex without making it explicit. Off the top of my head, one of the best musical descriptions of sex is the chorous in Garth Brooks' That Summer.

No one is disputing that, and it does still happen. However, what do you call explicit?

Because "Givin' the dog a bone" is fairly explicit... There's just no profanity.

How about "Love Gun?" Not explicit?

People that think all new music sucks today probably get most of their music from radio and tv.
Because of the internet people can self publish their own works. No more gatekeepers of taste based on what they think will sell.
I can listen to hours of great music every single day on just YouTube alone.

Nah, there's a difference between not liking something and it being bad. At least to a point, one can appreciate complexity and skill even if the style doesn't meet one's tastes.

a few samples of my music taste as its pretty broad.

this female driven metal band has recently become a fav and i love how she flip her voice like a switch from clean vocals to growls

Looks like The Loop is still playing classic rock...

The thing I remember most about listening to Chicago radio in my teens is loving and hating Steve Dahl...he could be really funny, but also way too obnoxious at times and he would talk over songs when the station forced him to play music and he had something he wanted to discuss. Finally, he talked over a song that I REALLY liked and then proceeded to make fun of a guy who had appeared on his show and died under anesthesia for a dental procedure, saying he was the only person dumb enough to die at the dentist. I had enough and never listened to Dahl again...the thing about the guy dying may well have been some kind of hoax, but the whole scene just plain infuriated me.

IMHO, Dahl was funny until he had kids and started talking about them on the show.

Also while there was a lot of synergy between him and Garry Meier, I think Garry was the real brains behind the comedy. I've listened to both of them on their own, and Garry is the one that's consistently funnier IMHO.

That's a really good song with some amazing guitar work. I need some lyrics though!

Musical taste is very personal. I like a variety of music, everything from Classical to Heavy Metal.

Right now I'm listening to this:
