Relocation Kits (Need Help!)

Ok, in the never ending quest for superior lubrication protection and performance, I'm thinking of running an oil filter relocation kit on my truck.

Now, here's where the fun begins. Most all (if not all) require the use of a filter that has 3/4-16 threads.

On my truck though (Chevy with 4.3L V-6), I believe the engine has a built in by-pass valve, and thus the O.E. filter doesn't have one.

But all of the 3/4-16 filters I have found have a built in by-pass valve.

Would having two by-pass valves cause a problem?

If so, does anyone know of a BIG 3/4-16 filter that does not have a by-pass valve?
 
I know that perma-cool sells a SBC bypass eliminator. It might work for your application.

I also see no reason why having both(filter and block) bypasses working. Shouldn't be a problem. Most big 3/4" filters have bypass.

You could also get a dual filter(stock size) mount and not worry about bypass since you'd be using 2 OEM sized filters in parallel.

There seems to be a few kits that will work...Perma-Cool, TD Performance.

Hmmm,so you don't think two bypasses would be a problem...

Would running two filters in parallel be of much benefit?

Also, should I try to mount the new filter as low or as high as possible? Would it really matter?

Parallel filtration, IMO, is equal to having bigger/better filtration.

Two bypasses should not be a problem. Think of it as added insurance.

I personally don't feel any need to mount the remote filters higher or lower.
One reason to have remote filtration(other than more/bigger/better filters) is the EASE of filter removal.

Keep the line short. Pressure over distance is something to consider.

Another con is additional points of failure. Every now and then I see ziptied remote filters and other poor installations---- poorly routed/dangling lines that fray from movement, touch hot exhaust or moving belts/pulleys, which always causes failure.

It makes no difference how many bypass valves you have. The only one that will open is the one with the weakest spring. I read somewhere that the stock bypass valve in the Chevrolet mount will open at about 2 PSI. At one time Perma-Cool.Com had a teflon plug for the relief valve. Then you could mount two Ford filters 3/4-16 thread to a remote mount. That makes no sense for street use. For street use you install a sandwich adapter and leave the stock Chevy filter where it is. Run a couple of hoses to a remote mount submicronic bypass filter. All of the oil goes thru the stock filter but a small amount per minute is being cleaned first. The stock filter grabs the big stuff which is almost non existant in a street engine in good condition. The submicronic bypass filter grabs everything too small to be removed by the high volume full flow filter. Normally with a good motor oil and a good depth filter in a good engine you don't need to drain the oil. Someone that understands oil filters and how they work can do about anything. The main thing to remember is filters that clean oil are very restrictive. The oil always needs to be able to find another way to get to the engine. The only advantage to using two filters that only remove large engine damaging abrasives is for racing where you are not concerned about sludge and acid formation and are going to dump the oil after the race.
One of the guys on this site told me about the flex a lite sandwich adapter. I ordered two for Chevy V 8's and one for non V8 GM motors. The 6.0 Chevy filter looks small. It may take a filter with a smaller gasket like an Oldsmobile. I called flex a lite and was told the GM sandwich adapters have relief valves. I'm anxious to see what they look like. I have been using Perma-Cool.Com adapters. After 40 years of experience I'm still learning. We learn together. If the spring in the GM adapter bypass is stronger than the stock relief valve I will drill a 1/4" relief in the adapter, otherwise it will be a straight bypass system like a 53.
Fords, Chryslers and others with the relief valve in the full flow filters are easy. The ability of the GM relief valve to bypass both filters makes things more complicated. I just installed a Motor Guard M-60 on a 8.2 GM Detroit which has two full flow filters that have the same 13/16-16 thread and gasket size as a Chevy V8. I used a Chevy V8 Perma-Cool adapter with a 1/4"relief drilled in it. It took awhile for the Motor Guard to get hot which means the oil has too many other ways to reach the engine parts. That's OK here in the Dallas area. Maybe not so good for short trips in the north. There you would need two adapters and two Motor Guards. Then maybe for cold weather drill the Motor Guards internally so that two streams of oil are going thru. One stream being cleaned and one stream heating up the oil filter. For heavy duty filtration of ATF for the big 1/2" fluid lines you could install a remote filter mount with a Ford 3/4-16 filter such as the FL-1A. To go submicronic you could install a Ford 3/4-16 thread sandwich adapter and one of the submicronic bypass filters. ATF can have more abrasives than motor oil. Stock ATF filters are even more usless than the engine oil filter. My Ford C-5 filter is a bad joke. The problem is I've never known anyone to ask a dealer how good the oil filter is.

I believe the company Transdapt still sells a 13/16 remote filter base. I know I used to stock them at the auto parts store I managed.That way you can still keep your OEM filter. Also on my 99 S10 4X4 v6 it uses a remote filter so you can always buy the adapter from GM

Actually, the O.E. filter is 18x1.5MM
